Having owned a Harley Tri Glide, let me say the reverse is crap! To much use and the breaker trips, reverse is very slow and doesn't move the trike as it should. I've also owned three GW trikes with reverse and it's a little better, works as designed but is still slow and any grade with either the HD or GW puts a strain on the electrics.
I too wish HD offered a reverse on the touring models, just for times needed..gravel, sand, backing out of downhilled parking space etc....
But they don't, so if I were to install a reverse setup on any HD, the Chanpion reverse kit is the one I would go with... http://www.championsidecars.com/reverse_gears.asp
Harley at one time used a starter for a reverse on sidecars. Did not work real well as the starter motors would burn up. There are several companies that make a reverse set up but are not cheap around a grand. I have installed them for several customers. I really wish I could afford on for my 02 Ultra with Harley sidecar.
