I just did mine. Dealer gave me a set of stock take-offs for free and I decatted myself. Purchased the XiED's from nightrider and did it all myself. Total cost was about $140 since I put in new gaskets and clamps. Still have the original stock muffler in case I wanted to change back...I Don't.

I have exactly the same observations as the original poster. I did want to add something fairly interesting though.

I have two riding buddies that both spent in excess of $2k to upgrade their exhaust systems. One has '12 RG with V&H pro pipe, Rhinehart slip-ons, screaming eagle heavy breather and SE Super Tuner (no dyno). He also did cams, although I don't know which ones. The other has a '13 RG with the pro-pipe w.monster rounds, SE Super Tuner, (Dyno sheet showing 81 HP and 92 TQ) and SE a/c. We did a 250 mile trip the other day, they decided to goose it a bit on a long deserted straightaway. Not wanting to feel left out, I decided to join in. The funny thing was that I kept up with both of them, and wasn't really pushing it to the limit to do so with my stock setup. Only difference was that I wasn't as loud doing it. Now, I know that on paper and in all realistic theory, their setups are much more powerful than mine, but there wasn't enough of a noticeable difference to compel me to go run out and spend all that extra money. It's highly probable that they had more "in the tank" left over than I did when all is said and done, but at over 100mph already, I was perfectly fine with my setup, and wasn't embarrassed at all to be running a stock setup in that situation.

Just a personal observation as before that, I was feeling that I should be doing more to keep up with what everyone else is doing mod-wise. Wife is happier that I am taking her and the kids on a summer vacation with the money I saved on an exhaust system, so papa is also happy.

I also have a kittyless pipe I got from fleabay. It is waiting on me after I get back from this deployment, round 100 bucks shipped to my door. I cant wait to see the diff. P-51, here is a how to from the forums. Post#8 from Pine Tree explains it all.

This should help you alot. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...-headpipe.html

Here is step by step with pics from american customs: http://www.americancustom.com/media/news/AmerCustom.pdf

Good luck with your project P-51.

My dealer is a 300 mile ride round trip, so I will ride up, have lunch while he installs it, and have a nice ride home. The forecast is looking great (low 80's, no rain) so a day riding and a nice lunch sounds like a better day then changing a headpipe.

I dropped the headpipe off at UPS today, and shipped it to the dealer. I will re-box the take off, and ship it back home. Luckily there is a UPS Store across the street from the dealer.
You managed to make what otherwise is a 39 dollar project as a DIY in no more than one to two hours into a 300mile round trip with shipping both ways and a $70 per hour rate.

I call that disposable income. ;-)

I have done three so far. Mine, my wife's tri and a friend's tri. I have a friend that is a TIG welder and he took care of the welding chores in exchange for some bike work that I know how to do.

Lowers heat, controls pinging, and has better throttle response.
