Default Engine Light

Hello All,

I was on my way home from work this morning getting off the freeway. When I got to the end of the off-ramp, I lost almost all throttle control, the engine light came on. As I sat at the red light ,the bike was idiling normally but when I tried to accelerate, the bike had almost no power. I was able to limp off the freeway and pull over.

I turned the bike off as I always do using the ignition and not the right hand control switch . I sat for a minute, turned the key back on and started the bike. The check engine light went off and everything was back to normal. I've had the engine light come on before but I have never experienced the power loss like I did today. I friend told me awhile back that the computer sometimes needs to reset for the engine light to turn off. My concern is losing power like this on the freeway at 70 mph.

Has anyone experienced this and if so what was the cause?

I have a 2008 FLHTP Electra Glide with a 103 with 18,200 mile on it. The only upgrades have been a set of Bassani 2" 1/2 slip ons that I installed over a year ago with no noted issues.

I'm taking off on a road trip at the end of next month and don't need a break down.

Hopefully there are some answers out there

I'd check the throttle servo connection where it connects to the throttle body - lots of chatter about fretting, etc. Clean, use dielectric grease, replace, ride.

But I'd also get the codes. I think the instructions are in the manual (much easier if you have a device like a Power Vision), or take it to the dealer to read.

Lots of threads on this. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...e-problem.html

Sometimes its an issue with the twist grip sensor as well - so again, I'd try to read the codes - either per your manual, or preferably at the dealer who can interpret these often cryptic codes.

Thanks for the heads up. Will the codes still be there even though the engine light went off?

That is why the engine light came on in the first place...

To alert you that there is a problem. Historical codes remain in memory for something like 50 on/off cycles, I believe. If you have an owner's manual, and actually read it once in a while, it would have told you that. The service manual will give you the procedure for checking codes, and even has a list of codes so that you know what is happening or not...

Ok Thanks again,

I bought the bike used last year and don't have a service manual but I will definately buy one ASAP. As for now, I'll search the web for the procedures to look for the code(s) You've been very helpful

You'll find a list of codes on these boards, use the search feature.

Search for DTC codes or Limp Mode.

First check to see if you have any stored codes.

Problem Solved. Went to the Harley Dealer to determine codes. The following codes were detected:

P2135 TP Sensor correction error (This put the bike into "Limp Mode")
P1511 Throttle acutator control power management
C1095 Front brake switch open

The Fix was to repalce all the wires on the servo connector to the throttle body. The Tech increased the length of the wires to take that 90 deg bend out of it. Poor design by HD, but corrected by the Tech. The price wasn't bad. Now I have piece of mind for my upcoming ride. Thanks for everyones input.
