Opinions needed... I'm considering ordering A/C, PCV and Jackpot 4" slash up slip-ons from Fuelmoto and doing the install myself. The problem is, I leave on a 4000 mile trip in 3 weeks and don't want any issues. The reason I'm even considering this is because of a ping that my dealer can't get rid of. I'm told the only thing I can do now is perform a stage 1 and tune the ping out. So, my choice is to do the stage 1 and hope I don't have any issues with the tune OR don't do anything and listen to the ping for the next 4000 miles. What should I do???
You could put all that stuff on your bike and keep the original tune (map) and be no worse off than you are now, your ECM will adjust the to the AC and pipes. When you start messing with a new map is when you run into trouble, but you will or should always have the original map you can put back on at anytime. It can be difficult to get a proper map. My first try was going through fuel moto, my bike ran like crap for a year, after repeated attempts to get a good map from them I dumped their stuff and went a different route with a proper tune from Doc in Florida and never looked back. I think you should go ahead and do it. If you can't get a decent map by the time you leave, just put the original back on and go on your trip and try again when you get home.
my 09 pinged when completely stock under certain conditions:
2800~3200 rpms up 6% grade. ( under all other conditions, it was fine)
I solved that with Nightrider.com xieds. ( under $125) I put on about 1800 test miles under various conditions..especially those which had previously resulted in pinging
then put on hi flow exhaust
for 1000 miles
then hi flow air cleaner ( Ness BS- under $120)
and have over 10,000 miles with that set up.
works perfectly fine for me.
If your ping problem is similar, that may work for you.
If your pinging occurs under most driving conditions and your bike is in stock trim, there is a problem and that should be addressed.
there are various ways to approach this with the manufacturer- one of which is that the motor is possibly not emissions compliant - which is on them.
once you start trying to "tune" the bike then H-D is off the hook.
in preparation for the trip, go over your tires, belt, change fluids, check brake pads ...all that stuff no fun to loose a day and pay thru the nose for emergency fix.
got roadside ? I use the included with membership HOG roadside with the $20 upgrade- unlimited mileage towing to nearest dealer.

Your going to let it inhale and exhale with the stage one, HD's re flash with that won't help much because they have to keep the stoich 14.7 fuel ratio. When you get the slip ons and a/c... get the Power Commander 5 and a map from Jamie.
You will have a cooler motor, more torque and a little more sound. You could just get the PC5 and map for your stock setup to get rid of the ping. Give Jamie a call and tell him what YOU want, he will give you a straight answer and not just try to sell ya stuff.
If you're happy with how it's running (except for the ping) there is no need to do anything but install an XiED product on it. Will cost about $100 and takes 10 minutes. It's plug-n-play.
You haven't stated what year your scooter is nor how many miles are on it ... However, what you said "the dealer can't get rid of it" makes it sound like it's still under warranty. If so, the ball is in their court and if their resolve is a "retune" it's their problem. On the other hand a Power Vision ( a bit more money but much more efficient ) retains the stock oxygen sensors ( narrow band ) and will actually provide you with a better tune in the long run. As stated earlier Fuel Moto is the team to contact for advice and guidance, especially if the cost is coming out of your pocket.
Call Jamie at FuelMoto... talk with him, place the order, by end of week you will be glad you did. Great guy to work with and his products and knowledge are second to none...
