still the wheel turning the belt, turns the pulley, turns the tranny shaft.

probably nothing to worry about and slight metallic whiring would be right

if you put the tranny in gear and maybe pull in the clutch lever you'll have similar, slightly more noise and drag

Loose a magnet off your stator?

if in neutral, pull the clutch and spin---- the primary is now 98% disconnected from the wheel.
only residual drag within the clutch connects them

metal conducts noises, you can use a stethoscope or use a screwdriver or dense rod placed against your ear bone to the area(s) of interest.

if your bike has IDS, there will be extra slop at the rear hub

funky odor- could be slipped clutch, could be burned stator.

if a magnet were lost ( usually from someone using air impact tools on teh compensator)-- then charging would down or zero as the magnet will often destroy the stator as it comes off

I have an 08 FLHTC does the same thing, it is a little back lash in the tranny. Had it since new, no issues for 65000 miles. My noise was made by rolling the tire back and forth, clunck clunk. May not be the same as yours.
