Have a 88 FLHTC and want to get a better cruising hwy speed. Any suggestions out there. About to do a tear down and ride to Milwaukee for the anniversary. The bike is #9 of the anniversary models that year and I thought I would ride it back "home".
I have a 1990 Glide, bought new. Living in the UK it was an International model and came with a 61T rear pulley. Too much man! I now run a stock US spec 70T, despite having an S&S 107 in it.
Your bike is already geared quite high and raising gearing further will hurt performance, also probably increase fuel consumption. In addition you will be changing gear more often and find difficulty getting away on hills. Personally I would leave it as it is!
If you do long hiway trips at steady speeds your bike will be fine. Mine is happy cruising at over 4,000rpm on German autobahns! If you are not happy or comfortable, then use earplugs. Best travel aid on the planet!
