Street Glide 18" Rim Refurb
Hi Guys, Just bought a 2nd hand 18" 2011 SG rim to put on my 09 SG.
Its got some surface stains on the exposed aluminium rim, aluminium center hub and the black powder coated portions are dull from neglect on the previous owners behalf. Overall I would say its in "poor" condition however its go no dents scratches and runs true. It was cheap ($50), hence I thought I'd give it a go and try to resurrect this rim to its former glory.
Any one have an idea on what products to use to polish the rim up? or should I send it to a mag wheel repair shop for a once over perhaps? im pretty sure that it can be bought back to life with a bit of elbow grease...?
Most of your stains on the silver part will come out easy enough with never dull or my favorite: flitz. As for the black parts clean up with simple green and a brush. Some have waxed the black parts for a longer lasting clean. I use a good detail spray like wizards mist n shine. Do the black parts before the silver parts.
I feel you on previous owners neglect. I bought my '09 SG used with 17500 miles on it. Previous ownee must not have ever scrubbed wheels. I cleaned them up using above method and now appear like new.

I did hit it with some never dull, on the rim. came up ok, but will continue to work away at it. I will try the Simple Green and brush also for the back parts and then maybe hit it with some NuFinish polish to see if that brings it up.
As others have stated, treat the exposed aluminum with a polish like Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish and the black like the painted surfaces. Mothers removed the stains on my wheels and the more I polish, the brighter it gets. The newer wheels have a glossy black paint, try a good cleaner wax or a 3 step clean, polish and wax system. Good Luck!
