Not being a mechanic or a motor head here is my concern; my 09 UC is just about to turn 50,000 on her. For the last few months I smell a slight odor of oil whenever I get to a good operating temperature. My riding friends say it is a sign of rings going bad. I check my oil on a regular bases and it seems I am not burning extra oil. Also, I have not overfilled the bike with too much oil. I cannot find any oil leakage anywhere on the bike. Since I am still under warranty, I want make sure if it is rings I get it repaired prior to the expiration of the warranty period which is March 2014. What can one do to check to see if the rings are going south?
Clean your AC filter, and you might see where that smell is coming from. The vents from the rocker boxes feed oil mist into the intake manifold, so it is common to smell that when riding.
If you are that concerned about the top end, have a compression check, and compression leak down test, done on it. That will tell you if it is time for a top end rebuild...
(Don't listen to those friends concerning anything about a motor ever again... )

Do a leak down compression test, it will tell you if the rings or valve seats are going bad. Any decent shop can do it for you & the cost is generally small.
One more check, look on the inner side of the mufflers, underneath the shock. Shocks leak on the hot muffler, sometimes just a little, enough to look like road grime, but it sure smells. Also pull back the shock rubber boot, it should be dry as a bone.
