You don't need a tall windshield, just try a different style. I got the 6" curved one from harley, worked great. I removed my tall one for that.
I test rode a street glide and didn't like it because of the buffeting that you describe.
I know that the smoked bat wing side-vents (don't know what they're called, they are adjustable, open/close) make a HUGE difference. When I open them up, I get buffeting again. But they came with the Ultra. They aren't to expensive, I'd start with those two things. I know I found the street glide windshield worthless, but that's just me.
I tried that and kept burning the front of my Full Face Helmet. Hmmm, maybe their is an idea there.

like I said, when you get everything right, you'll know it. Amazingly enough, my last shield was an 8" and now running a 9" and it made a noticeable difference. It's amazing what difference an inch makes. Yeah, I know, that's what SHE said!
I agree with the others; try a taller demo shield. I used a stock SG (4") shield for awhile and the buffeting was horrible at highway speeds. I now have a 7" recurve from Fast Aire which is a great balance between looks, the ability to look over the shield and buffeting.
Only one of my SG riding buddies still has the stock 4" shield on their bike.
I called my local HD. Cancelled the tire balancing. They have demo windshields and will stop by after work. Great information. Looks like ill be "sucking it up and getting a taller windshield". I know better ways of killing brain cells other than a 50 mph rattling head.
A taller shield will help SOME. To really get rid of the buffeting get Jess Customs fork deflectoers. After going through several windshields with my Street Glide and none of them fixing the buffeting, I put a Jess Customs fork deflectors on and...buffeting was gone.
I would also recommend looking at shields other than harley. You can get a good quality shield from many different venders for half of what the harley shield costs.
Hello
I am new to the Batwing fairing. I had ridden a Dyna since 96 and I now have 500 miles on a 2012 ElectraGlide. When I get to 50 mph I feel a vibration in my head. I did an extensive cleaning this past weekend and found that there were no weights on the front rim from balancing the tires. I made an appointment to have that looked at at my local HD dealer. While riding into work today I ducked my head below the 4" windshield and the vibration seemed to go away.

There is no way Harley (or any other manufacturer for that matter), can build something that will be perfect for everyone.
No matter how perfect or hard you work to make your bike "yours", someone else will not like it.
Also, that 4" windshield isn't what came with the OP's bike when it shipped.
So, someone has already done some customizing.
