Newbie asking for some expert guidance as I recently picked up a 91 FLHTC with some damaged fairings. I would like to restore the bike back to its original design and stay with parts that fit the existing gauges and mounts. Inner needs replacing first, however, I have had no luck browsing eBay, CL, and other online vendors for these obsolete parts. Any feedback you all can provide is greatly appreciated.
The Inner/Outer Fairing for your year was used from 1988 through 1995. It changed in 1996 to the basic ones used today.
The inner fairing part number is 58196-88 for the black inner fairing. They have been obsolete for many years. It will take patience to find a used one. You may go to your local Harley dealer and ask them to search the Harley internet (closed to the public) to see if someone might still have one in their inventory. Other than that, you will need to check with some of the Harley wrecking yards to see if they might have one. You can find some on eBay. AZ Cycle Parts is one.
Good luck.

as for instruments, you are correct in your thinking, the front wheel cable driven speedo you have was replaced by a tranny driven electronic.

Right, I should have remembered. Sorry.
The mechanical drive speedometer was used on the FLHT/FLT models until 2001. The electronic speedometer started being used on the Road King in 1996. I never could figure out why Harley didn't change the others to electronic until 2001. So if you can find an EVO road King with electronic speedometer pickup, it should be a direct swap. Or you can change your transmission case to an aftermarket case with electronic pick up.
As far as for changing to the later Fairing,I can speak from experience. I changed the entire fairing system on my 1989 Ultra to the 1998 Ultra. This included the radio and wiring.
It can be done, but with exceptions. The mounts and fairing will bolt up to the holes. But the older ignition switch and front fork lock will not work. If you just want the look without the function, you can just change the lock. But if you want everything to work, be ready for some work.
First, the Fork locking plate is different. I made a Fork Lock plate and welded it to the frame. This let me use the later model ignition switch. I changed the entire fairing Interconnect harness, gages and instruments. If you wish, you can use the original gages but the tachometer and speedometer will need to be changed. If you want to go with the electronic speedometer, you can modify the transmission case to accept the speedometer pick up. Or change the entire transmission to a Road King transmission. The RK had the electronic speedometer. I bought a new speedometer that was cable driven. Like I said, I did it, but I bought part catalogs, service manuals and studied what to do. I went to dealers and friends to look at their bikes. I searched eBay and other places and took pictures for reference. (This was over 15 years ago and I don't have the bike, or pictures any more. Just memories)
It took me 6 months to complete the change from starting the research, to finishing the bike. The actual time working on the bike was about 2 weeks. This included taking the bike down to the bare frame. But I had everything ready to change everything.

I'm thinking he moved on. He was looking for this 9 /12 years ago. Not the oldest thread revival but not bad!!
I am completely restoring a 1996 RK for touring. I like to install a batwing fairing with space for voltmeter, oil pressure, temperature, and tachometer gauges. I also like bluetooth audio with possible navigation. I like to know what fairings will bolt and wire up to my RK. Can I use a more modern fairing?
