I Installed one of these this afternoon, and like several others I ended up with 1/4" between the guideplate and the bottom of the shoe, instead of the recommended 3/8", no shims. 27k on the ODO. Unfortunately the instructions don't give any guidance for the less than 3/8" scenario. I could get the shoe to compress if I pushed down on the top of the chain with my thumb, and I could get the shoe to bottom out if I really put some weight on the top. But I don't really have a feel for what is too tight and what isn't for the primary chain.
I went ahead and put it together with both springs and only 1/4" but I'm wondering if I should have removed the inner spring as Expat1 and a few others have done.
Also wondering what Hayden's recommendation is when you have less than the 3/8" per the directions.

Good question, what does Hayden recommend when your left with only a 1/4" or even a hair less with a chain so tight that when you run the bike you see no up and down movement like you can see in Hayden's youtube video? This is what I ended up with and it seems a few others. I know your here to help, thanks.

Here is some pics of the Hayden I took out. I did the best I could with my phone camera. When I look at the shoes side by side it was surprising how much longer the stock shoe is. Some of the pics I took didn't turn out for some reason.
Now that I have the new shoe Hayden sent me for free in with just 1 spring, will be interesting to see how it looks when I look it over after I get 3000 miles on it. I would like to know whey some of us have to mod them and use only 1 spring, Kathy can you helps us figure this out? We ran our fingers all around the chain and to us it felt fine, but then the stock shoe looks a lot better with 17000 miles on it, I think that alone eliminates a chain problem.
Wow, your chain must have been awfully tight to cause the chain to cut so deeply into the Hayden. So you say your chain appeared to be in good condition with no issues that you can see and like you say the chain didn't cause your stock shoe any problems. I can't wait to hear from Kathy, maybe she can explain why some installations result in extreamly tight chains. Maybe it's Harley's fault for not being precise enough when building their primarys.

Yes it was very tight. I caled Hayden that day and Kathy assured me it would be fine after the chain worked it's way in to the shoe. Even when I took the shoe out my chain felt to tight. As for the primary, about the only way there could be a difference is if my chain is to short.
Before I take the cover off again I need to find out how many links a stock chain has then count the links on mine. To all the guys with that whining sound from the primary, with just 1 spring on the Hayden that noise is just about gone.

I'm sure you have the same amount of links as all others. If you were short one link you would have to short a chain. One link is allot considering what we're talking about here. Kathy is in CA so we won't hear from her for a few more hours if she has some answers yet.
Gphdxlc my shoe looks just like yours. I installed mine in in may I just open it up now after 7k .
The noise level never went away in fact it has gotten worse . I give up I have order the New HD manual adjustment one . I was unable to get the hayden out How did you remove yours?? Thanks in advance Ripp
Those that used only one spring, was the larger one the stronger one that's coming with the kit now or the lighter one (older model) like in this pic? The shoe on the pic has the cutout on the front indicating it's the new style.
I didn't use a shim thinking it has plenty of travel (11 k on the clock);

In your position I woulda gone with the old style larger spring together with the small secondary spring.

Bummer, looks like Hayden has a problem and all of us that got the new style.
What I did takes 4 screw drivers. I took one and slid it between a link in the chain and pushed down hard on the top of the shoe, this got the chain up and out of the deep cut groves until I had clearance to slid another driver in from the side as a spacer. I had to have 3 of them over the top of the shoe, then I was able to pull out the Hayden.
Hayden needs to come up with a fix that they can endorse.
