Interesting post....

Here in Florida, there is no state vehicle inspection, so the STATE doesn't really care what you do to your bike, or other vehicle.

We also pay the vehicle registration fee to the tax collector's office, cause that's exactly what it is!

I guess we don't have to worry here in Florida until the bureau-***** at the EPA come knockin on our door!

Thanks for the post! My dealer also told me about BUB, and I will definitely check them out. BUB is in Grass Valley and it's only about 4 hours from where I live. I bought my 40' Holiday Rambler from DeMartini RV's Grass Valley location back in '05, and I fell in love with the town. I will take a ride out there and visit them soon.

Denis Manning is a world renowned land speed racer. He’s designed and built some of the world’s fastest motorcycles. The man knows his stuff. I believe they designed and make a lot of stuff for Rienhart exhaust as well.

At this time, but in the past what started in Ca (CARB) was adopted by the EPA at a federal level.

As well no in Idaho we do not throw stones. This is an open carry state Thank you.

If someone was to visit our state and notice something not cool or dirty or whatever and mentions it. I see nothing wrong with that. It's true. Along with all the rules you have there. Different then here in the country. Does not mean I am better then any one else. It was my first time in California and that
was what I experienced.

The manufacturers will write the checks but guess who will pay for the increased cost of doing business in Californica? Can you spell customers?

Kind of reminds me of the tobacco settlement a number of years ago. A package of smokes was about $1.50 before the settlement and now they are what, about $4.50?
We need somebody to protect us from the government.

California's emission laws today are the national laws tomorrow. It's already against the law to tamper with the exhaust or intake on any emission controlled bike in a way that affects emissions. In fact it's already a federal violation with a $10,000 fine. The only saving grace is that most states are not enforcing it. Several after-market suppliers have already been prosecuted, their defense being that they only make the parts, they don't modify the vehicles (similar to gun liability laws). They have been successful with this argument. However, with the influence of environmentalists increasing at both the state and federal level it's just a matter of time before they begin testing and identifying vehicles that have been modified. If you have a modified bike when they do this it will cost you a good bit to put it back to stock. You may even face a fine with the growing penchant for revenue collection that all levels of government are demonstrating.

I'm surprised that so many dealers are willing to modify the intake and exhausts of their bikes. It's technically a federal offense. I guess they are counting on their particular states not to enforce and the feds not to engage at the state level for EPA violations. My dealer practically pressured me into changing the head pipes to get rid of the cats, change the intake and add a fuel controller to make up for all the havoc that the changes would cause.

My bike is stock at this time and I plan to keep it that way. I've wrapped the pipes and added WardWerks fans. It runs fine and I'm not bothered by heat so far. There are a number of reasons that I'm keeping it stock but this topic is one of them.

Here's a link to an EPA flyer regarding motorcycle emission laws which was published in 2003 (things have gotten tighter since):

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/roadbike/420f03045.pdf

It says in part:

In other words, owners of motor vehicles cannot legally make modifications that cause the emissions to exceed the applicable emissions standards, and they cannot remove or disable emission control devices installed by the manufacturer.
With regard to previously posted comments on the relative pollution from motorcycles the EPA brochure states:

In fact, motorcycles produce more harmful emissions per mile than a car, or even a large SUV. The current federal motorcycle standard for hydrocarbon emissions is about 90 times the hydrocarbon standard for today’s passenger cars. Although many of today’s motorcycles will actually meet the current California standards, the California hydrocarbon standard is still 18 to 24 times the current federal passenger car limit, depending on the displacement of the motorcycle engine.

All things considered born & raised in Cali and don't think I am leaving the state until retirement , unfortunately too many years off
So that being said I think I will get a set of Bub 7 California compliant mufflers with cats for my true duals and put them on the shelf and just change them out if or I should say when we go to bi-annual inspections
Well they already got my diesel bike is just around the corner
