Default Weird Accessory Wiring

I recently put a set of *** cooling fans on my Ultra. I got the splitter accessory plug from the dealer and installed on the plug under the seat. With the multimeter, I speced out the wires and wired the GPS into one set of wires on the plugs and the fans into the other set.

I found out that the fans were cutting off whenever either brake was applied. I am assuming that Harley has the ground opening when the brake is applied on the loop I'm on. A few more minutes with the multi-meter will answer the question in the morning. I didn't check the wiring with the brakes on as I never thought that would be an issue, particularly with cruise already installed.

This is something that is not noted in the service manual -- or at least I can't find it. To me, it seems crazy to have such a feature on an accessory plug in the first place. Almost as crazy as having the accessory plug under the seat in the first place.

I doubt that is your problem. The accessory plug probably doesn't provide enough current to run the fans. I would wire them elsewhere.

They only draw 1.2 amps. The GPS draws more than that and it only quits when the brake is pressed. It has to be an open ground from the brake activation like is used for the cruise.

If it was draw, I would be blowing fuses.

I just looked in the service manual and on page B-18 it shows the plug. If you used the red/yellow wire for the plus side it does go through the brake relay so you are correct in what is happening. Other than the ground there are 2 other wires. I didn't follow them through because they go off to a harness plug and I didn't have the time at this hour to follow them. I can do that if you don't have a service manual.

I took a quick look and the orange/red goes to the 15 amp fuse labeled radio power. That just leaves the orange which goes to the interconnect harness plug 2A. If I can follow it through I will let you know where it goes.

Looks like the orange gets it's voltage from the same place as the orange/red. The difference is it goes through the accessory switch that is located by the cruise switch.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys.

I multi-metered things this morning and confirmed what you said in your posts. Part of the problem is the splitter plug has all black wiring. Not very helpful.

I moved the ground from the relay loop to the straight ground and she is happy as a lark.

Still don't understand why they just don't give us a good old fashioned bus bar.

Thanks again.

That plug has multiple applications, for instance if use with a lighted saddlebag latch kit, they flash momentarily when the brakes are applied.

But for a Fella with a meter and a wiring diagram, you can wire up anything you like.
