This audio was recorded over the open fuel filler neck on my 07ultra with the tank over ž full. (The metallic click at the beginning and the end is the ignition switch.) The sound is amplified if I take the gas cap off but the sound seems too crisp to have originated in the fuel (fuel pump). Its entirely possible the tank is just amplifying a sound coming from under the tank and I just discovered someone borrowed my stethoscope and probes, making diagnosis difficult. It doesn't happen when Its cold or when hot and shut down for less than about 4 minutes. If it gets hot and sits, the noise happens. It was happening periodically for a week or so about 4 mos / 8k miles ago then stopped for 3 mos. If you know what this is, please let me know!!
When you turn the ignition on, the fuel pump runs for a couple of seconds. I don't know how or why it would make this noise, but I would suspect it's related to the fuel pump.
I'd experiment with varying levels of fuel in the tank. I'd assume that the noise would be more prominent with a near empty tank. Once you've confirmed that the noise is originating in the tank then the fuel pump becomes the likely suspect. At this point and barring any other symptoms (starting, idling, etc) u might opt to live with it. On the other hand if u begin developing the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive syndrome, remove the pump for inspection/repair/replacement (parts).
