Default 87 flh police blinker issue

I have a 87 flh police model and the blinkers only work when i hold down the signal button. once its released they stop. they flash fine its just a pain trying to hold the button and drive. where should I start. Thanks in advance for any info.

AFAIK the '87 does not have self canceling turn signals, so instead of the current style "momentary" push button for the blinkers, you should have switches which stay depressed until cancelled by the rider.
( I have an '88 CHP, FXRP)

the flasher is the old car type thermal break- easily replaced with a plug in electronic type- that'll solve any problems with owner changed bulbs too. ( autozone $15)- such as LEDS or low watt, deleted signals or even high watt bulbs

the system is very simple...

hot from the fuse box to the flasher module- then from there it splits to the 2 switches ( L.R) then to the lights ( L or R)...and through the bulbs to ground

if original switches, they may just be crudded up internally

ha ha blinker fluid is fine so are the muffler bearings. but really the blinkers flash fine it must be the switches you have to to hold them down for them to work. Thats where i will start.

Mike gave some very accurate advise. If it doesn't work as he prescribed, they could given his instructions.

But they don't have to stay that way! My 1990 Glide has flashers (self-cancelling etc) with one press operation, but that didn't become standard across the board until a while later. IIRC Badlands make a flasher module which may fit your bike, so take a look at their website.
