Default Compensator - The Good One

Had my 2010 StreetGlide in to the dealer this week to repair a leaky stator plug. Both the outer and inner primary must be removed to access the plug. With 44K miles on the stock engine I was more than a little curious as to the state of the compensator as well as any clutch wear. I have read thread after thread about problematic compensators here on the Forum.

To my surprise the Tech reported to me that there was no visible sign of wear on the compensator and the clutch looked like little or no wear has occurred.

This was an Extended Warranty repair and I know the dealer would have done anything short of criminal to be able to bill for more parts and labor. I gotta believe they were telling me the straight up. When I told the Tech about all the horror stories I had read about bad compensators he replied, "You got the good one."

Then I must gave gotten a "bad one", since mine crapped out at 12,800 miles. Luckily, it was under warranty. But I'd like to know the good and the bad story here myself.

Me and you both bro! I have fretted over this worry since I bought the bike new. I know there have been at least three redesigns to the original and the new 2014 compensator is a complete rework that features a self oiling design.

Overall this bike has been quite solid with no real major issues. I dont hot rod it much but I dont baby it either. I do keep it maintained on a scheduled basis. Who knows it may grenade next week. Pretty happy camper here.

I was not so fortunate, I did not get a good one. Of course, it got me 30K down the road, but now with all the racket, difficult hot starts, it is time to change it out. Parts on order should be here any day now, hopefully tomorrow.

I have a good stock one, low miles, free and will give you a $1 to pick it up. LOL

I don't believe to many stock 2010 comps were bad unless you started adding power, mine went when I added cams and the 106 jugs. Maybe it was the bump in compression even though I had auto compression releases installed as well? That and I started to play with different oils instead of sticking with formula plus. Now I'm on my second SE comp, the 2014 style. I hope it last a little longer!

Replaced my horrible OEM 09 compensator with the SE unit.
Went bad at 20K. I understood 2010 and later were better units (??)

I wonder if he replaced the used compensator bolt with a new bolt on re-install per the manual??? Even if he says he did, will you ever really know?

I replaced the bolt when I had to remove the sprocket to install my Baker tensioner, but there are many who will tell you notto bother.
