Default Water in the swingarm?

So when I went to change the rear tire and pulled out the small bolts that were holding on the belt guard, a lot of rusty water poured out. It wasn't just a little bit. Pretty sure the whole swingarm was completely full. How in the hell does water get in there? And the fact that the water was very rusty, should I be concerned with the structural integrity of the swingarm? Not sure what to do here.

I have an 09, there was a service bulletin on this issue- the cure is to enlargen the drain holes from the swingarm through the belt guard.
took about 5 minutes including the walk to the garage and getting a charged battery for the dewalt

Lots of information on the above thread link. Common problem with the 09 touring bikes. Drill out the belt guard right below the drain hole in the frame, the belt guard is covering the drain hole. Also seal up the hole that allows the water to enter the swing arm.

Check out the link, it has pics of the hole that needs to be plugged and drain hole locations.

My '11 did it.

Fixed as above. Stealer told me that an '11 couldn't do it, until I pulled the belt guard bolt in front of him....

I had a VERY early '11, and I wonder if there was aleftover '09 swingarm at the factory somewhere...

replace it with HD Synthetic Swingarm water or you will void your warranty.

Thanks for the info fella's. Mine is a 2011, sounds like the problem should have been taken care of. Anyways, I will plug the holes with silicone tomorrow, for now I just have the middle bolt taken out of the belt guard to allow for draining.

I am still worried about the rust though and becoming a safety issue.

Does anyone know if this was fixed by HD in bikes built after '09. Wondering if I need to look at my '12. It will have to wait until spring now as it's in storage till then.
