Default post-hibernation oil change

Motor has not been started since late November and I need to change the oil. Normally would do so in fall, but didn't this time because I'm installing a True-Track, which requires removal of rear oil tank bolts and I did not get to it in the fall. Should I change the oil before starting the motor, or start it and run up to operating temp then change the oil? Thx

If it were me getting it good and hot with a nice ride is what I would do before changing the oil.

No big deal. You should always get the oil up to operating temp before changing anyways. Do this will burn off all the condensation that has accumulated while sitting for the winter.

I would drain it.

if your old oil has acids and water in it, why run that through your motor?

this is a dry sump motor, most of the oil is sitting in the pan.
pull the plug and let it drain.

while you are at this, check the oil pan bolts, the torque spec for that was revised in 2009.

Run it first for at least 10-20 miles.

i agree you should get your up to operating temp. the whole idea of getting your oil up to temp before you drain it is so that any contamination will stay suspended in the oil while you drain it if you dont then it has settled in the oil pan and possibly will not come out with the cold thick oil.now your adding your new oil to contamination in the tank.

I had this problem. Bought my 09 SG in 11 w/ ~2000k miles. Soon after I started seeing oil drips. After much fretting and searching I finally checked the oil pan bolts and found many on the rear were finger tight. (I had ugly images of a catstrophic oil dump on my rear tire, at speed.) I do not recall where I got the settngs used when re-torquing. I have since bought an HD shop manual for 09s. Are the torque settings listed there outdated? Happen to know the correct setting or can someone direct me to a source for SBs? Thanks

Re the drain-first question. Ugh, disagreement on the forum. Not easy to ignore Mike's minority view.
