Indy's can't get Harley parts anymore. So if you want a Harley filter, instead of aftermarket, you have to supply it.

Everybody take a deep breath!

OP, if it's been 3,000 miles since you last changed fluid before taking it there and the oil on the dipsticks looks fresh now then he changed the oil. Obviously, he could have changed the oil without changing the oil filter, so that's the only question. .. did he?

You stated something about your neighbor suspecting a corroded "cover" on your K&N filter, with a new filter under this cover. This is where it gets weird. Either that means its a replaceable element type filter, or you have some sort of cover (maybe one of those finned covers to "cool the oil"?). If it's an element type filter, the indy should have said so and advised you to buy an element next time, or said he cleaned it if it was the reusable element type in good shape.
We need to see this filter.

Even still - it's only a couple bucks difference for an oil filter - let the guy have it so he's there when you need him in the future.

My indy gets 10% off from the local Harley dealer and charges the Harley price - let him buy the filter and everyone wins.

I do most of my own work, but usually buy aftermarket parts from my indy because he gives me advice and will occasionally do something for free. I've been going to him for years, and hope he is still around for years to come.

Never heard of a K&N "cover". Bullshit. I've used quite a few K&N oil filters....

Sure they can. And if they're half as smart as half the people on the internet, they can get them at a 20% discount.
