I have 940's, not all that different from 944's. On the softest setting mine are stiff and harsh.
The 944's for my '12 Limited came with HD springs. Even with me at 240 and loaded for a long trip they were too harsh on the softest setting. Progressive put regular springs on n/c and now the shocks are just right set between first and second ring. Well worth the ~$500 I paid through Amazon. Also like the touch lower seat height.
For the folks with the 13" 944 did you notice the lowering at all? Also, what is the load amount where one considers HD springs vs. regular springs ? I'm a 240# solo, 390# two up, 50/50 solo vs 2 up so I am torn on which way to go.

I started with HD springs. I'm 200 lbs and the springs didn't budge when I rode with them no preload at all. Add my wife, another 200 lbs and the ride was stiff, no preload. Sent the shocks in to swap springs (another $50 on top of the $500) and now I have shocks that work. I can add preload if needed now also. If you want a nice comfortable ride, go with the standard springs.
I already had the rear 1" lowered before the 944 shocks. Now I have the extra 1" of travel. That is a big part of the reason I went with the 944.
