Less meat at the top part of the bushing than the bottom so a square top rod will have a tighter press and less likely to spin. That is why I had dark horse put later model bushing less rods on my crank. The crank in my bike now is stock 08 just like yours that has had .007 runout since I put Torrington cam bearings in at 10,0000 miles has 30,000 on it now and runs like and smooth as a champ. I got the dark horse crank in a box just waiting for the stocker to bite the dust. I think it will do what yours did slip a wrist pin before the run out gets it. But I got a spare for that day.

Reading the S&S motor website they say later model 103's have tapered rods.

That is correct they do just don't have a wrist pin bushing in them.
