The headlight is a standard H4 bulb (also called 9003)
The passing lights are 881 bulbs. I replaced mine with 896 bulbs (38w, black top). They are noticeably brighter.
Found the attached bulb guide while I was researching. Just need to use a PGJ13 base bulb, the rest is preference for wattage and top. The longer life rated bulbs of the same wattage will have lower light output (Google the bulb types for additional specs).
Like WDE, I replaced my passing lights with the 37.5w 896 bulbs. Much brighter for less than 20 bucks for both. I also replaced my headlight with a Hella 80/100 and a ceramic socket. Total cost on Amazon.... 20 bucks. You have to be careful with the headlight, you can't just slap a 100 watt bulb in (though some people do). They can melt the sockets with all the heat they produce. Upgrading to a $12 ceramic socket is a cheap and smart investment. Just recently I did a side by side night time comparison with my buddy's 2014 Limited with the whoop-de-doo LEDs. He probably threw more light on a low beam comparison, but I think on high beam, I had him beat. But that's just an off the cuff test. Still, not bad for 40 bucks total cost. Basic bulbs will never be as "white" as the super expensive LEDs, but you can get bulbs that throw MASSIVE light, for not too much money. If you want to really take traditional lights to the next level, look at a new Euro Spec headlight. Super cheap by comparison, yet throw incredible light! And don't rule out the 30 dollar HID kits on ebay. I put one on my Fat Boy, and WOW, did that sucker throw light!
OP please dont take offense ... but isnt this same exact question posted every day, sometimes several times a day on multiple boards here? Wonder why mods dont collect the feedback and make a single sticky thread with all the options usually asked for in each of these threads. Again nothing against you, OP ...
New people come on here all the time and ask questions we've all seen before. You (like me) clicked on this thread hoping to read or learn something you didn't already know. It will never stop and that's not a bad thing. If it bothers you that bad you should skip the thread or try a new hobby like basket weaving.
I read an article by Daniel Stern (I believe was his name) and it gives a lot of good information about lighting. I'm still looking but might throw an Osram 65/70 in the headlight and 896's in the passing lamps. This should produce some more light. I talked to Custom Dynamics. They told me that they are working on some LED bulbs and hope to have them available by end of summer.
