just for giggles, did you plug the quick-disconnect back in and crank it? I thought I heard about just doing that on another thread.
Yea, I did. Pretty confused now with all this. Bike is back in my garage now, had it towed after 3 hours of waiting for them.
Going to have a few beers, regroup, and go out in the morning and start over with looking at everything. The 1040 code is confusing me, not sure if that got thrown when the bike shut down or if it was there from before.
Might clear the codes and then try starting it again, then check for spark, if I havea spark I will pull the pump out the tank and check the lines.
Thanks everyone for all the ideas, I'll post when I find the issue.
I've seen that U1016 Loss of ECM Serial Data before. Don't get too focused on it. Since you don't know when it was generated it could be totally unrelated and old.
No spark on either plug, pulled the ignition coil and checked it against the manal ohm resistance measurements and the secondary and primary seem to be within spec.
Checked all connections and retightened, still no spark.
I didn't read through the whole thread, but did you remove the seat and check the ECM connection? Do you have an Electric Diag manual for the bike?
Hey Dawg, I just went back out after doing some reading and I didn't know teh ECM wouldn't allow spark without compression (actually readng the crank sensor speed), I had both plugs out when checking.
I put one plug back in and cranked it over and SPARK! checked both plugs and both have spark.
Now I am back to the idea I am not getting any gas. I pulled the quick disconnect after cranking it to check spark and it came off pretty easy like no line pressure was present. Connector is wet with gas. I can hear the fuel pump turn on and then off when turning the ignition on.
OK, so now any ideas on what to check for the fuel? BTW it is gas not diesel, and this probelm started right after I filled up.

Sounds similar...after towing 256 miles to a Denver dealer it was the o-ring in the fuel disconnect. It was preventing fuel from leaving the tank. I think I saw elsewhere that there are two o-rings in there and it's often the first one. Anyone that's done it that can shed light on this? I'm def keeping one of those little Bastards in my tool kit!

Pulled the fuel pump/filter assembly and one of the lines had come off the pump. It was the bottom one (I think this is the one that comes out of the pump to the quick disconnect). Last time I had this apart was 20K miles ago to replace the filter. Maybe I didn't get the line snapped in all the way and it took this long to wiggle loose.
Put the line back on, made sure the collar snapped into place, put it all back together and it fired right up.
