First thing is to check for codes to find right direction to go in. Good Luck.

Can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the ignition on?

or do you smell raw fuel at the exhaust pipe? ( which says whether fuel system is working- or not)

check fuses

"just shut down" says electrical problem
"like it is out of gas" would suggest it stumbled before dying- which would be a fuel delivery problem

Check the Fuel Filter, or, perhaps you need to replace the In-Tank Fuel Lines.

That happened to my 07 street glide. Turned out to be the valve on the bottom of the fuel tank, it has a check valve. Mine kept closing shutting off fuel flow, push it up toward the tank and you will feel it detent. If that works change it out, it will keep closing on you.

Check your spark plugs and wires too.

Check the fuel pump relay under the seat, if you don't hear the fuel pump energize when turning on...

Are you sure it was not out of gas? If it was, you could have a frozen injector.

A good place to start would be to see if you are getting fuel, and spark, then take it from there.

Spray some starting fluid (ether) in the throttle body while you're trying to start it. If it does, it's a fuel problem. If not, it's no spark. As mentioned, check your codes.
