I've read a lot in these forums about the benefits of running topless, especially when done in conjunction with an air cleaner upgrade (K&N or SE or equivalent), an exhaust upgrade to something more free flowing, and an upgraded ignition computer like the Power Commander III. What are the down-sides to this, other than the $$? Is there a potential for more particles in the engine? I'm in the process of adding all these to my '05 VRSCA, so I want to know both sides of the story.
Please fill me in on Running Topless. It looks like you will have the air filter installed so how would you get material into the engine? Sorry, Im new here.[:-]
I have run my VRSCSE for 6K topless. With no issues at all. You get more sound. When you open it up it sounds like a old 4 barrel kicking in.
Any VROD questions at all can be answered @ Vrodforums.com
It is a great site for the vrod owner.
Running topless means removing the air box cover on the V-Rod. You get better air flow through the engine. It is usually done along with the mods I described in my original post.
Thanks for the reply rainierexpress. I have been on the Vrodforums.com site as well as this one but signed up here. I'm in the need of a V-Rod education but I'll be up to speed in no time. Please forgive the dumb questions.
It's not a dumb question. I had no idea what it meant for a while. What has been said about the vrodforums.com site is true. Sign up there and you can search for answers to all your questions. There is a lot of experienced riders and smart people on that forum. The galleries are great, and there is even a thread with sound clips of all the different brands of exhaust. I found that very useful when I was picking my new pipes.
If the bike runs better without the cover, why did they design it with the cover?
Runs better in terms of HP. The loss is in the increase in---intake noise, possible fuel consumption, and the EPA's ability to fine for improper exhaust fumes. The increased air flow will may the exhaust composition different and not what our friends in the EPA want. Harley has to balance the desires of their customers for more power with the regulations that the government sets forth.
