Default Help w/ Springer Braided Front Brake Line

Here's my set-up:
'03 FXSTSi, Chubby Wild1's drag bars & pullback risers, Kuryakyn lighted turn signal mirrors. I just got the bars & risers mounted. I've got the wiring disconnected from under the tank/frame. My next task is to pull the wiring thru the bars and wire in the Kuryakyn lighted mirrors. I'm ready to order braided cables w/ parts needed, including Magnum Sterling Chromite II brake, clutch, and throttle cables. I THINK I am okay with stock lengths, BUT...

1. Am I right in assuming I just go with a one-piece brake line to replace the stock upper/lower brake lines with the hard line sections? Just remove the hard line pieces?
2. If YES, what do I use in the way of clamp(s) to secure the brake line?
3. I've been to the Magnum Shielding.Com website, and seen their prices...Can somebody recommend a better pricing source?

Also, any advice/tips on this mod for a Springer would be greatly appreciated!

I've delved into the unknown on this project...So far, I've made it this far strictly on the faith I've put into what I've read from you fine dudes on this forum! Thanks!!!

Anyone? No one? I've searched till I'm sick of looking, especially for some type of clamp/guide/holder to attach the front brake line to the springer forks. Anybody done this? Pictures?

Default Springer brake line

I ran into the same problem when I put together my Springer/Nightrain. I used a 3 piece brake line from Magnum , a 45 degree off of the master cylinder - to follow the drag bars, ordered a custom length of line , measured what I needed , and a 45 degree at the caliper. I wish I still had the part numbers for you but it was a while ago. I ran the line down the right side of the springer and used a couple of rubber covered clamps bolted to the leg . I have some pics you might be able to make it out . Good luck

Thanks, Budzilla_

With the new drag bars & risers it looks like my clutch cable is too long by an inch or two. So the throttle cables and front brake cable may be also. I've got to get a good measurement to find out. I went to the dealer yesterday and ordered two chrome/black coated clips used on the '09 springers for the brake line...
I'll have to decide what angles to order for the banjo bolts, too.

Do you remember who you ordered from? I could order on-line from the Magnum website, or I guess I could get my local indy to order them for me, but not sure about any price savings...

Default Springer Brake Line

I am doing something similar to my bike. I know what clutch line and throttle/idle cable I am going to use. I've got the xbones so I know my stock brake line will be to long.

I am having some trouble trying to figure out what front brake line I need. I think the single piston front brake is limiting my 'interchangeibility' amoung softtail modles.
I am thinking I might be ok with a stock FLSTS, FXSTS front brake line..?

Squiggs, what break line did you end up with?

Zach,

I used some clear 1/4" plastic tubing I had in the shop. I ran it the way I wanted the brake line to go, and measured what I needed. Then, I went to the Magnum Chromite website (whose cables I used) and clicked on the link above the brake lines listed for a springer, which is a list of questions to determine if you need to order custom lengths. I answered 'yes', and then they list different cable lengths which are not "custom", but are stock for other applications. I found the 42" length I needed in a one piece brake cable.

I installed it and it fits great! (The GOOD news...)

(The BAD news...) My -2" under stock clutch cable was really a couple of inches longer than I really needed, but I went with it anyway...BUT, after I had assembled it in the clutch release cover and had reinstalled that back on the bike, I tried, unsuccessfully, to reinstall the clutch lever in the handlebar bracket. Even after I adjusted at the turnbuckle adjuster to put slack in the line, it lacked about 1/4" of slack for the lever to slip around the bracket and fit in place..!

Sooooo...I wound up having to remove the clutch release cover ***'y again so as to get slack for the cable to put on the lever, then RE-install the cover. A BE-ATCH!!!

Thanks Squiggs!

I hope you hadn't got the pipes back on before you noticed you needed to get more slack from the cable... I know I won't [thanks]. I did check out that Magnum Chromite website. They got some stuff..

My best guess from the infromation I could find was 40-42 inches for my front brake line.
I talked to another guy on this forum who looked like he had a pretty close set up to what I wanted to do for bars [he has the 97 BadBoy] and his stock line is 41.75" and he thought they were too long.

I assume you went with the 90 degree bend at the bango to follow the lines of the bars?
What kind of height and pull back do your risers give you?
What Length is your Clutch Cable?

My Set up for those interested reading this after me:

2008 FLSTSB
WO512 Wild 1 Bars
1997 BadBoy Risers (4" straight)

About to Order:
Clutch: 60.69" (2008 FXDF Stock Size)
Throttle/Idle: 25.5" [housing length] & 90 Degree Bend (2008 FXDF Stock Size)
Front Brake Line: One Piece 40-42 inches 90 Degree Bend

My risers are 6 1/2" rise and 3 1/2" back. My clutch cable was -2" under stock for FX Springers. Same for my throttle cables. I had a call back from Magnum Shielding about the lack of clutch cable adjustment at the adjuster. They suggested adjusting at the clutch inside the clutch inspection cover. I don't know if this will add adjusting room in the cable, or if it just helps with when the clutch engages, but I'll give it a try...

Default Hmmm

Update:

So I got my new seat this week and put it on my bike, now I am having second thoughts on the set up I had been thinking about. this evening I put my drag bar in my stock risers (3" vs the 4" I was going to use) just to get a feel for what they might be like and to double check my cable measurements, and its a pretty far reach from my new perch...

I am 6'2" with a 36" shirt sleeve and I have to hunch forward to get to the bars. I really perfer a more relaxed riding position than what this is turning out to be. (Seat is a Hollywood Solo from Corbin, its great!).

I would probably want these bars to be up and back so much so that I think the drag bars loose their low profile look.... thats a kick @$$ look.

...I haven't given up on the drag bars yet but I'm looking for alternatives... speedsters maybe...
