I just bought my first HD Friday (an '81 sportster 1000) and the rear tire is dry rotted. My question is it's a 130/90 16 and my neighbor just happend to have a 150/80 16 wth like 90% rubber with this fit with no issues? I hope this isn't too stupid a question and hasn't been covered but I'm on my smartphone and the search function isn't working. TIA!!!!!
I have just fitted a 150/80 to my 1990 Glide and it is VERY close to the fender! I found the fitted width of mine is actually 153mm, so it is almost an inch wider than a 130, although it is almost identical in overall diameter. The good news is that it is the widest tyre you can fit to a 3" wide rim, so will fit your wheel.
That just leaves other things that might get in the way. You need around 1/2" clearance with anything next to the edge of your old tyre, to get the new one in, especially your chain and fender. Your wheel will need to be plumb centre in the fender!
You might post in the Sportster section to see if anyone has any experience with that size tire on a Sporty.
I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone getting a 150 on an older Electra Glide without serious modifications, Graham. You didn't have to do anything to get it to fit? I've got a 140 on my FXRS and had to trim the beltguard so I could back the thing out of a parking space. It's eyelash tight in spots.

I've fitted a 2007 swingarm and 2005 rear wheel. Tried very hard to get it all together with my original 1 1/2" wide belt, but had to admit defeat and use the 2005 pulley with narrow belt. Fits very well, including the 2007 belt guard. Like you I previously had a 140 with trimmed guard, with only 3/16" belt/tyre clearance.
I would be surprised if a 150 will fit a sporty, but OP can see if it looks possible.
