Need to drain the tank, regardless of how, in a well ventilated place and, No Smoking. You will blow up or burn down otherwise. Pumping all you can out out firstis better and SAFER.

Don't know exactly what the setup is on a Heritage, but I took an alternate method on my Sportster. Run the bike until it's nearly out of gas, then let it idle in the driveway until it sputters out. Remove the seat, tank bolts, and overflow vent hose, and whateverelse holds the tank down. I didn't want to disturb that nice fuel connection and vacuum hose at the petcock, so I just unscrewed the petcock from the tank, then lifted the tank straight up. Some fuel will leak as you unscrew the petcock, but it won't be much and you can catch it with a funnel. As the Old Gunny says, be careful.

This is how I do it on my fatboy... take a small pair of flat vice grips and lock it on the rubber crossover tube to seal it. Then have a long piece of rubber hosing (can't remember the diameter) ready to drain into a gas container. When you pull off the crossover tube, quickly put your finger over the tube. Then remove your finger as you quickly put the rubber hose on the tube. I spill very little gas doing it this way.

I use a hand pump to remove as much fuel as I can from the tank first. Then I will remove the fuel feed line from the pet **** by just lifting up on the lock ring, and pulling down on the hose..that's very easy, and almost no fuel spills or squirts from pressure in the line. The Service Manual will tell you to depressurize the line first, but it is not necessary.
Then I use a pair of hose pinching pliers on the crossover line, and a piece of rubber hose on the left side crossover nipple, that runs down into a fuel container. That's for my 03' Softail.....my 08' Street Glide has no crossover and its not half the PIA the softail is!

Just did mine a few weeks ago...Pulled the quick release on the Fuel line under therear of thetank, removed the other end, (also quick release) then put the first one back on, draining the tank down that 6 inch hose into a funnel and gas can. Let it run a while...took a couple hours, but I was in no hurry.

Once that was done, I went to the crossover, pulled one end, plugged the tank with a rubber plug, and drained the remaining fuel out of the crossover hose.

All in all, I spilled about 2 ounces of fuel from a completly full tank.
