Hello, changed the primary fluid out today for the first time on my SGS. I let it drain a hour or so and refilled with 38oz of fluid. The level before draining seemed higher than it is now with 38oz in it. I'm guessing the dealer added too much when prepping the bike? I just want to make sure Im good or if I should try and match the beginning level?
Hard to tell in the pics but the beginning level is noticeably higher.
Just did mine and added 38 ozs. as per the manual. If I remember correctly the manual says the bike should be upright (level) when filling, could you have drained on the jiffy stand and filled upright (level)? If so the level on the jiffy stand would have looked higher...don't mean to state the obvious, just trying to help.

Before drain and refill
After refill with 38oz
Usually your dealer would have no reason to open the primary cover as these new bikes are filled with oil from the factory when delivered...unless of course they decided on their to open and inspect & add...
Did the fluid spilled when you opened the primary cover?
The only time you need more than 38 oz is if you remove the primary cover then it is 45 oz if my memory is correct. I've know dealers to only add a 32 oz standard bottle into the primary at the 5K mi chk, no big deal

Yes, according to the manual it's 38 wet and 45 dry. When I bought the Formula + I bought 3 32 oz. bottles, 38 for the primary and 28 for the trans. equals 66 so I figured 2 bottles plus a little bit (2 oz). Parts guy told me exactly what you said, their service dept. uses 2 bottles and only puts one in the primary.
As IUOE ROB said, if drained while on the jiffy stand, more than the 38 oz's could have drained out. It looks to me from the pics that the fluid level is correct before drain and low after refill. Which will cause more than difficulty finding neutral.
I don't remember if I read it in a manual or if someone told me, the fluid level has to be high enough for the clutch plates to be just touching the fluid.

Now you have me wondering, I drained on the jiffy stand and filled with the bike upright/level. I have to read the manual again and see if I was supposed to drain level and fill level, maybe I too drained more then 38 ozs.
2014 SERVICE and OWNER'S manuals don't specify if the bike should be on the jiffy stand or upright when drained. Judging from the location of the drain I don't think it makes any difference.
Then they say to put the bike upright to fill with 38 oz. Upright because it makes it a lot easier to put the oil in as opposed to leaning over to the left.
This is a different procedure than my 2005 Heritage, but it all works.
BTW, the clutch cover for the chain case takes a T-27 torx.
