The 21 year old tape deck is getting replaced and after searching it seems there are not really any direct replacement options out there. Can anyone give me some guidance? I have hogtunes speakers I just installed.

Welcome to the forum Sir! Perfect timing. The Hog tune speakers are mediocre speakers just a hair better than the stock speakers. Honestly you don't want to use those speakers for your new build. Not what you want to hear since you just spent your hard earned cash. But it's a well known fact in the audio circles.
That said. First thing I would do is get my money back on those speakers if possible.
Let us know how many speakers you want to run.
How much money you want to spend and if FM radio is a must have.
You will also need an Amp to push your speakers.
I'm going to stick with the Hogtunes as I'm not looking to do a "build". I was perfectly happy with the 21 year old tape deck and factory speakers. I'm just looking for a reasonably priced (sub-$500) solution to replace the tape deck. Retaining the factory controls is a must and connectivity to my iphone would be nice. Don't need a CD player just a radio with ability to connect to the phone.

Good feedback. Basically you can choose any quality HU out there. Sony, Kenwood, Alpine and Pioneer. All have the features you're looking for. The only install kit I know of that will maintain your hand controls on a 96 Harley is the Hawg Wired unit. There may be other units out there that I'm not aware of. You might also check with Biketronics.
Is there a part number for the 98-13 bike side harness male plug connector. Im confident my wiring knowledge could help me circumvent the H.O.G. wired $100 harness adapter.

You can just run new wire for yellow, red, and black. But, you will need a interface for the controller.
