I have a 2017 Ultra - has the boom audio with gps - reading around the forum for different ideas - looks like $1000 would get you a decent upgrade to the audio amps/speakers - and I see many of posts about the Sony HU however...for a guy just wanting a louder more crisp sound then factory and the android open source freedom...what would be the downfall of something like this....assume the waterproofing was taken care of...
HU - $75
4 channel mini amp - $175
4 upgraded speakers - $250
Misc connections - $100
Total - $600 - seems it would be louder and more clear then the factory, no flashing and much more options with the android based HU...better gps options, better audio players/youtube streaming, can surf the web when parked....
I have one of these HU's in my truck and they are nice....perhaps the prices I listed for amps and speakers is too low and you get what you get but quite a few speakers and amps with high reviews in those ranges....maybe its an ohm thing?
complete newbie at this so I expect a lashing but I cannot be the only guy thinking about it.
I don't think there's any issue with the HU you linked in your OP. I'm interested to hear more about the $175 amp that will run 4 speakers but more importantly, you are allotting $62.50 for each speaker. Tell us more about what that looks like.
after further thought - I will more than likely get what I pay for..probably junk...I just got the bike this year so I will give it time. maybe that gps system will grow on me or I need to adjust the settings - I hate how it interrupts my music and constantly recalculates...I think I have figured out how to shut the voice prompts off but it still goes quiet when recalculating. I was surprised by the requirement of having to flash it for may upgrades also.

R u always running the gps? If you are then its going to interrupt to tell you where to go. If you dont or arent using the gos then you need to end the last route you used

interesting - good info and I will try thank you - I just watched a video on the android audio also - that would allow e to run waze it appears.
You need to turn off the GPS function. You said you just got bike and its a 2017 try to find a BOOM manual so you can turn on or off the functions you want. The stock HU while not the greatest is not that bad compared to the older ones. I have a 2014 Limited with the with amp & speaker upgrade but kept the stock HU. For my needs its fine. Loud and clear at any speed.
As for upgrading tons of info here and some pretty good guys that offer help too. Have fun..

I get rained on so much with pop up thunderstorms I just don't want the hassle of a unit that is not truly waterproof like the stock head units are. I know better sound can be had with aftermarket but to me this thing is a motorcycle first and foremost. It's not an electronic entertainment platform.
Also since you have an Ultra you will lose the ability to use CB and Intercom with ANY aftermarket head unit. I don't use my CB much, but when I do I am glad I have it.
