Default Wired earbuds on Boom Box GTS

Hi All,

I've read so many articles and still don't get what I need to do. I have a '22 Road Glide ST with the GTS stereo. The plug for Apple Carplay is installed but nothing else. All I want to do is get a 3.5mm receptacle so I can plus in a set of wired earbuds. I don't care about the intercom or voice commands or any of that BS. Just want to listen to music. Doesn't seem like it should be that hard but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to do it.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I just re-read your post... the issue is going to be the harness (I suggested below) plugs in where you have the "CarPlay plug", I read that to mean you have the plug under the fairing to fool the head unit into thinking there's a headset (mic) plugged in... If you do what I suggest below, your CarPlay plug won't be able to be plugged in... sorry

I am guessing your bike does not have WHIM and it does not have the HD wired headset DIN jack... cleanest easiest way is to put a headset harness kit on the bike like this
https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/e...kit/p/69200865

Then you can plug a headset with mic into it, if you wanted to.

My bike is a Limited, and the last was an Ultra, so it already had the headset jack... but I got earbuds I like to use from time to time, so I bought an adapter for about 10 bucks that I plug into the headset jack, then the ear buds plug into the end of it... like this (I did not pay 30 bucks for it, but I can't find the site I bought it from) and my ear buds work great for listening, but no mic function.
https://www.plugup.com/7_pin_audio_o..._p/ad%20y1.htm

But I have flashed my bike so that I don't need the "CarPlay plug" to get CarPlay to be available without a headset, an Indy with TecnoResearch's Centurion or Diag4Bike can flash the bike then the CarPlay plug won't be needed or be in the way... otherwise I think your stuck listening thru the fairing speakers.

Thanks so much for the reply. Your assumptions are correct. I think I'm following what you're saying. Pull the Carplay plug and pickup the $75 communication cable which gives me the 7 pin DIN. Then get that adapter for $32 which allows my earbuds to plug in. Then I can have the head unit reflashed to get the Carplay back if I want to.

Sounds like for a couple hundred bucks I can be up and running. I'd be thrilled with that solution.

Did I get it right?

Again, thanks so much for the clear and detailed response.

You pretty much got it right on. You gotta understand that what you are doing it is getting around the CarPlay requirement for a mic to have car play available with or without a mic present. So you use the "CarPlay plug" under the fairing, which is great, and easy... as long as you don't want to use a headset, and just listen thru the fairing speakers. Problem is when you want to use a headset, where you plug the CarPlay plug in is the same connector you would be plugging in that wired headset harness or a WHIM harness, so you can't use the CarPlay plug anymore... now you're back to having to have a headset with a mic to get CarPlay available.

The "easy" fix, for being able to choose between your earbuds or a headset with mic, or the fairing speakers, is installing that $75 wired headset harness, get a DIN to stereo mini adapter for your earbuds (I just went thru my Amazon, that PlugUp adapter was $11 in 2017 when I bought them), then get an Indy to flash your bike so CarPlay's requirement for a mic is disabled (a dealer can't do this anymore). JUST ONE WARNING> this setting can get screwed up inadvertently by the dealer later if they hook up to your bike with DigitalTech when they are working on your bike, and you might have to get your Indy to redo the setting. When a dealer has DigitalTech hooked up to your bike, if they go to some screens it may change that requirement back for a mic. I have had it happen to me twice over the years, one time I knew it was going to happen (changed out the BCM in my 2016 RGU with a GTS), the other time we were screwing around with settings to try and fix a lighting issue. But I have Diag4Bike, so I changed the setting back when I got home and all was well again. I put the GTS in my 2016 RGU back in the fall of 2019, and back then the dealer could do this setting (they lost that ability in the spring of 2020), so I have never had to have a headset (mic) to get CarPlay to be available, but IF I want to use a headset (mic) it works fine too. I have done this using TechnoResearch's Centurion, and I now have Diag4Bike and have done it with it too, so if you find a an Indy or a buddy in your area with one of those (Techno Research's Centurion is pretty popular with them) diagnostic software it is very do-able (and probably other software, those are the two I have used).

Funny thing is 2 weeks ago I bought a 2023 Road Glide Ultra, it had 8 miles on it when I brought it home. I was going to change the setting for "CarPlay mic type" with my Diag4Bike, I went to the setting and it was already set to "disable" (disables the requirement for a mic)... so I just backed out and did not make any changes with my software, I plugged in my wireless CarPlay adapter https://autoskyus.com/products/autos...ay-adapter-pro laid the phone on the seat, no headsets anywhere around... and turned on the bike. About 10 seconds after the GTS's splash screen went away CarPlay kicked up... no headset (mic) hooked up, and because I use the wireless CarPlay adapter the phone was laying on the seat NOT plugged in to the USB. From the factory, the "software hack" was already done??? I fully expect the setting to get screwed up when the dealer hooks up their diagnostic software up to my bike in a month when I change the exhaust and intake, and add an amp and different speakers... but its good to know changing it back will still be a breeze when I get it home

Thanks once again for the detailed response and clarification. I'll do a little looking around for a shop that can help me out with the programming!

I've used a couple of these adapters for years with no trouble. They are injection molded instead of held together with heat shrink.

Is there an aftermarket radio that I can use this set up with ? My head unit keeps ( reading ) the usb. When it starts to do this it continues until I go to FM and then back to my media.

I'm not sure what you're asking, but if you're wanting to use wired earbuds, the adapters should work with what you have on your '14 UL, it did on my '16 RGU with both the GT and the GTS.

As far as the "reading" issue on the USB, only time I had that issue was when I plugged a stick in with 7,000-8,000 songs on it... or if I unplugged it for some reason and plugged it back in.
It was annoying, I tried re-formatting the stick, put the music back on it, then plugged it back in and let it just sit until it was done "reading" (in the garage on a tender), and all was fine.
I think it may have had more to do with some of the music's formatting/bitrate, but I'm not sure... once I went with the GTS I just started using CarPlay and Music thru that...
all of music was on the phone anyway.
