Is an amp really needed? Replacing the original speakers with the Infinity 62.11is really made a big difference; very loud (for just 2 spkr), lots of bass and crystal clear highs, well that is as long as theyre mounted on the outside of the pod. No matter what I do when I put those suckers in the pod it sounds like I have two blown speakers. The bass is gone and everything is muffled. Ive tried every one of the mods that has been shared here, and worked for others, but I have had no luck when mounting them in those PIA PODS. All that I wish for now is that adding the amp (PBR300x2) makes it even better sounding.
How did you get them to fit mounting them on the outside? pics?
I have them inside and ran them without the amp and it did sound like crap at higher volume.

Here are the Kappa's installed on the outside of the pods.
A pic of the notch filed to fit around the Boom grill screw.
And a pic of the Boom grill modified to so it would not come in contact with the Kappa tweeter.
I had clearance issues doing it that way , the Boom grill would be in contact with the outside spider of the speakers in the 12 O'clock position had I done that ? They were good at 6 O'clock though , I don't believe the fairing opening sits over the speaker centered , the HD one yes but not the Kappa.
The slightly smaller diameter OEM speaker cone & spider are just enough smaller to clear / center in the fairing opening.
I know lots of folks here have mounted the Kappa's the same as you and seem to be happy with the performance. I wonder how many are sitting on the speakers as it's pretty hard to tell looking though the grills ?
Is this a problem , I don't know but I mounted mine inside the pods because of this .
Rock Woody, there have been a couple on here that have said that they added the amp with no flash and they were very happy with the sound. I guess that's what I'm hoping for.
I am one of the happy ones without a flash or magic box. But today I was lisenign to some Hendrix with a lot of bass and noticed distortion coming from front and rear speakers. Most everything else sound very good. So is a flash or other device needed to flatten the EQ, yes. There are setting that can be made using the Harley DT but if another update is installed there is a very good chance these setting will be wiped out. So as I see it this is a temporary fix and I'm not jumping on the bandwagon yet.
Someone also posted that HD was supposed to come out with a new flash or software update to fix the Boom II upgrade problems. Will it fix the Boom II problems, who knows. Will it help us with aftermarket equipment, I doubt it very much.
Our best hope is a devise that will work to flatten the EQ, unlike the magic box that does not work well in most cases.

I agree, when I was waiting for the boom grills I temporarily mounted the pods and could see at 12 o'clock that the surround was touching the spkr opening... then when the grills came and I installed them I could see that the surround was touching the grill pretty much all the way around. So I did a late night change and mounted them inside, AGAIN, but they sounded so bad I re-mount them on the outside and they sound great again. Guess I'm just going to take my chances on a problem arising from this. Been looking at other speakers that are somewhat indented from the mounting plate so that they can be mounted on the outside without the surround protruding through the spkr opening. Pioneer had one but it was only rated 2-40w.

Lots of folks have them mounted outside , haven't heard about any issues everyone seems happy with the sound , maybe it won't cause any ill effects.
It put me a whole day behind swapping them to the inside but they sound good even on the Hwy , it would have been much easier mounting them outside for sure.
So now we have some that just changed out the speakers and are happy? Gone are the days when you could interchange speakers and amps and not worry about flashes and crap.... And this is whining from someone who has worked in IT since 1972...... yes they had computers back then.....
So I've got to try just the Infinity Kappas first...... and soon so I can return the amp if I don't need it......

I installed 4 Kappas and rode it like that before installing the amp.
The Kappas alone are a huge improvement over stock.
So today I took out the magic box and mounted speakers on the outside of the box and just removed the grills for testing sake, since no dealers near me have them in stock.
Without the box couldn't turn gain past 5 without getting distortion at 3 bars from max volume
With the box back in with speakers outside set gain up to around 8 and sounded good.
With that said I'm still looking for more I suppose I could keep this setup for a little but After some reading today I'm leaning towards the biketronics 7.1's. just unsure witch amp to power them.
