I have a 2013 Ultra and would like to upgrade my fairing speakers. I know that there are countless threads on here about this topic and i have read a ton of them along with hours of googling...
i can go to best buy today and buy this setup :
AMP
Alpine - Power Pack 180W Class D Bridgeable Multichannel Amplifier with High-Pass Filter
Model: KTP-445U
SPEAKERS
Polk Audio - 5-1/4" Coaxial Speakers with Bilaminate-Composite Cones
Model: DXI521
$241 out the door and i have a $150 gift card to burn
they have the 6 1/2's in stock for the same price - but i cant find adapter rings locally and want to do the install today.
here are my questions:
-is this a worthwhile upgrade for basically less than $100 out of my pocket?
-is there a noticeable difference between the 5.25's and the 6.5's?
-i am going to need to run these 4ohm bridged - right?
i have a detachable tourpak, so i am going to leave the rear pods as-is, directly out of the stock HU for now. since the amp is 4 ch, i am considering adding speakers in the lowers as a winter project.
I only have an opinion on the Alpine Amp
It is a rock solid little guy
i have had one in the Glide for a year
I got my BT2180 yesterday so I will be pulling it out but it certainly has served its purpose
I'd think it would be a worthwhile upgrade for that amount over your stock setup. You might want to listen to the Primus/Infinity speakers if you're at Best Buy. I can't remember if they're 5.25 or 6.5 inches, though, but they sounded pretty good to me. The bigger speakers should sound better IMO, but you can always upgrade to 6.5 or 7's later if you want to get the project done today. I'd probably power the fairing speakers from the new amp, and just leave the rear speakers powered from the HK head unit for now. That would be the easiest wiring.

good amp and speakers for your particular upgrade. Can't beat it for the cost even if you're not using gift cards.

YES! go with 6.5" if you can swing it.

negative. You run one speaker to each output of the amp (it has 4)

I wouldn't. Run the pods off the rear of the amp with quick disconnects under the seat or something.

if you do this, then run the lowers and the fairing speakers off the front channel of the amp wired in parallel to get the most out of the amp. This amp is stable at 2 ohms without issue.
in the last part of my comment I should have stated, make sure that when you get your lower speakers later on that they're 4 ohm as well so you can run them in parallel to create a 2 ohm load at the amp.
Thanks ultranutz...
I am looking at the hawg wired woofer kit for the lowers, but they are 2ohm. If I left the rear pods stock directly off the head unit , can I run the 4 ohm Polks off the front of the amp and the 2ohm of the rear?
BTW...I did install the connectors under my seat for the rear pods. That all works great!
