Right now, I've been running without lowers on my '10 ultra classic, but want to put them back on soon. I ordered the cvo speaker pods from Surdyke and the 6.5 titans from BT. I would have thought that I wouldn't have to paint the pods, but they look like someone had sanded along the edges at the top portion. They don't look anything like pods that came with my bike, those almost have a rubber texture to them. I can't spend the money right now to color match to the bike, so might just rattle-can them black so they look better. I had some generic 6.5 speaker grills, but they won't work without making some kind of spacer. I was gonna order the cvo grills on Surdykes site, but it didn't list as a pair, would I have to order 2 at over $30 a piece?

Those Titan II's sound nice in the lowers! Nice punchy bass!
How much of a benefit do you notice running with the lowers? I have been on the fence for a while. It's so hot in Phoenix the lowers were the first thing to come off. With limiting airflow to the bigger motor I am reluctant to put them back on unless it will make a significant improvement. Thoughts ?

Well actually Harley Davidson engineered the lowers to keep the V-twin cooler by forcing air directly through the vents when they are open and the bike is moving. Theoretically the engine should be cooler with the lowers on. (According to Harley Davidson) Real world application for the rider in the hot sun of Arizona is a little different story. Sound wise IMO the lowers properly powered do make a significant difference going down the road at 75 mph. Like the lids they need power to hear em. Personally I wouldn't set up a sound system on an ULTRA without em. That's my .02.

As I have been told, speakers in the lowers are more beneficial then speakers in rear pods. I do not want to go with speakers in the bags just yet.
As for the air flow, I couldn't tell any difference if the motor was any cooler without the lowers. I have no way to measure temps. I took them off for the summer for my comfort, I like the wind keeping my legs cooler. I also noticed less wind turbulence without the lowers except for when I put my feet on highway pegs. Then the wind seemed to be scooped up toward my face which is fine when warm outside.
I rattle canned my speaker boxes.. turned out just as good as the lowers. Just take your time and don't paint when it's raining out. spray a coat of auto primer (don't use crap like rustoleum) to level out the surfaces then once it's dry, use 1500 grit and wet sand the primer lightly to make it smooth like glass. Let it dry thoroughly before painting and then just before spraying, wipe off with a tack cloth to remove dust.
rattle can it with enamel paint in 4 thin coats, comes out perfect if you take your time.
