DEAD DEER!!
Death by blunt force trauma?!
I have been a nightshift worker for a long time and the ineveitible finally happened! Took 10 years but it happened on Thursday night...just 5 minutes into my ride. Had a couple close calls but never any contact until now!
My commute starts at 9:40PM...37 miles to work. This happened only a mile or two down the road from my house.
Came around the bend and saw him coming...split second decision to hit brakes or nail the gas.
I was still in a right hand sweeper so I nailed the throttle to try and avoid what was lined up to be a head on collision. First instinct was to get front end ahead of him in hopes that the rear would follow! This goes back to my dirt bike racing where if you could get the front end over an obstacle, nailing the gas would usually get you through it!
He hit me in my leg, primary and saddlebag. Leg hurt at first but no marks...saddlebag has some spidered paint and the locking mechanism popped out of the button to open the lid. Lid is a little loose but may be able to tighten it up some.
I didn't stop after we smacked...verified turn signal worked and bag felt secure. I wasn't shaken up at all so just kept on riding.
I went about 15 miles to fill up at a gas station and called my wife. She had left for work behind me and verified that there was a dead dear right where I had explained.
Ride home in the AM sucked as there is just so much fog here...54° and foggy is just crap weather to ride in so maybe it's time to just ride during the day now.
Glad I built the motor up a little or we might have had that head-on collision...of course, if I had some more power I could have blown right past him.
This could have been worse and I feel lucky...could have ended up much worse for me, but glad it was him instead!
My new running lights helped me see him sooner and am glad I added them!
