just got a 02 wide glide. I've been riding rice my whole life but I finally worked my way up to a hog. I have ordered a service manual for the bike but I have a few stupid questions for you guys in the know. Oil tank, where is it? What kind of oil, motor and trans. anythink I should be watching out for? Any info would be great. Please excuse my greeness.(is that a word?)
Congrats on the new ride, once Harley is in your blood, you long forget about those "other" bikes. I have an 01 wide glide, only thing I noticed when I bought it used, was the wiring under the rear fender. Grab a flashlight, lay on your back behind the back tire, and make sure the wires for the blinkers/tailight are secured in the harnesses. Otherwise they rub against the tire, you jump on your bike all liquored up, and the first police officer you pass without a tailight will be more than happy to point that out to you.... They have such a little sense of humor!!
Get the service manual, our house uses the harley syn3 in everything. Or you can follow the factory suggestions and use the harley oil. I like the syn3 because it works for everything. Just make sure you change oil every 3 months or with the mileage suggestions. If you ever ride in a parade, keep the bike in netural as much as possible and change the oil afterwards. The oil heats up way too much in slow moving parades and you could screw things up.
Welcome, congrats on the "new" ride. Only thing you might want to check is the oil filter after about 25,000-30,000 mi. (look for little pieces of gray plastic in the oil filter) tensioners may need to be changed. Other than that enjoy!!! Dave...P.S. hello from N.Ga.
as said, check through the tech sections, there is more info on oils than you ever wanted to know.
for the record, I'm a Redline guye
20/50 in the motor
MTL in the primary
Heavy Duty Shockproof in the Tranny
Congrats. As for theengine oil, if you bought the bike from the owner ask him what oil he used. Usually you don't use a different oil, such as synthetic when reguler oil was used.
