One thing I got done before leaving town was getting the old 1" stock belt off. The HD Service Manual has you loosening up the top rear shock bolts and then disconnecting the rear shock lower bolts to help in removing the axle. This worked well with my Fat Cat exhaust as well, except I went ahead and removed the shocks completely - this allows you to clean all the fastener threads before reinstalling. Good idea to strap down your bike when removing the rear wheel, mine is not strapped down yet, but was very soon after this pic.

In the pic you can see how the axle clears the muffler - I supported the rear wheel with a floor jack - a little overkill but works nice. Also in the pic you can see my rear brake caliper all wrapped up and hanging by bungee cords. A learning point for me is when reinstalling the caliper, don't leave the tire jacked up in the fender - does not work. Took me about 10-15 minutes to figure out that by lowering the rear wheel back down it goes in relatively easy.

Alan,

I may never get into the primary as deep as you, but I sure will take great interest in what you are about to undertake. Here's hoping the work goes well and according to plan!

Hey O-Town, hope I do not go too slow for you and everybody else. Seems like time to hang out in the garage is hard to get sometimes....

Did not get a lot done today, I was really hoping to install the shifter shaft seal today but now I think I may skip the install. The seal I bought is the SKF 4260, and everybody over at the HTT Forum seem to think it is so much nicer than the stock one. The stock seal on my bike looks fine and the 4260 seems too big to replace what I have, it has an OD of .875" while the bore is about .775"...

What I think I will do is order the HD seal and compare it to the 4260 and decide whether or not to install it the next time I go into the primary - this is my 4th trip in 3 years so I am sure it wont be too long untill I go back.

Today I adjusted the new belt tension and rear wheel alignment. Then as mentioned above I had a look at my shifter shaft seal - have to carefully pull off the tiny snap ring then remove the washer:

I also checked all my deep sockets and do no feel that I have an appropriate one to drive a new seal in. The stock seal is about 1/8" inset from the edge of the bore.

Why cange out "shifter shaft seal"?
surely there must be some advantage over OEM though this is my first time hearin of it

So now I am moving on and started to clean all my inner primary fastener hole threads. I have said this before but I think it is probably one of the most overlooked steps in good mod practice, the cleaning of threads. I have a Craftsman Rethreading(52105) kit that works great for cleaning internal and external threads. Normally I chase the threads twice and then blow out the internal threads. Here is a pic of what I pulled out of one of my inner primary internal thread fastener hole on the SECOND pass:

Definately a great question, a lot of people always say "might as well change it while your there" and some will say "don't mess with what's working" - I am normally more like the latter. With repect to the shifter shaft seal, there has been a fair amount of failures of the stock one and all the "experts" over at HTT Forum seem to love the SKF 4260, so I thought maybe I will swap mine out. But now I am not 100% sure the 4260 is the right size for my Dyna so I will put this off for now and decide what to do later on.

Now if you ask me about the outer primary gasket - I reuse that a lot.

You definitly went the right direction man.

As far as this winter I might get a new rear tire and that's about it. I will open up my primary and inspect the comp cause I have been hearing some clunking out of the primary.....if she's bad then I'm going to trash it and do the baker comp along w/ their adjuster.

Haven't been able to really put many miles on the bike this season and next season will probably less w/ the second kid on the way.
