No it was one of the half inch hex bolts. I actually was rooting around the toolbox and found one that had a nice slim closed end that fit perfectly. Was able to get it loosened and out. Hoorah.
Head is off and I hope to swing by the Indy during work tomorrow to see if they can take out the compression releases and reinstall in the new heads.

Lot more carbon on the Pistons than I would have thought. Good way to clean them without removal?

Well done, no idea on the pistons, they not too difficult to take off, sometimes pin needs a clamp to press out and then re-install

If you do that you need to re hone the cylinders best not to remove.

Spray them with seafoam or ATF and let it soak for a while, that should break that crap up

Matt, think unjust just scrape off the carbon and use a bit of brake cleaner to get the best I can?

Robby, could be that you didn`t have enough spacers(washers) on the AC bracket. It`s hard to "eye it" once it is on the bike. I`m sure DK will make good on it.

How about some pics on the carbon build up?

Here's what mine looked like before and after.....I tried various solvents and got nowhere fast. In the end I used very fine Scotchbrite and plastic razor blades.

One tip if you do it this way is to bring the piston to TDC, and smear some grease between the cylinder and the piston to prevent any debris getting down to the rings. When you bring the piston down again, any leftover crap is stuck in the grease at the top of the cylinder.

wow that's beautiful!

Here is a better pic. With the Seafoam does it matter if some gets into the cylinder?

Also, nice little update... I ordered the AC support from DK Customs on Saturday but I had also left them a message when searching for it and mentioned that it had broken. Kelsey returned my call this morning and when I mentioned that I had found the part on their site and already ordered it she reminded me that they offer a lifetime warranty and would be refunding my purchase. So cool. Love that company!

One more note that I forgot to mention about DK, based on the feedback earlier on this thread I had ordered some Rockout Lockers (again from DK), at first I didn't exactly understand what these things did. Took all of 10 minutes to install them and now I totally get it. Not sure that I needed them but like the reduction in slop.

To be honest, I don't even think there is any need to clean the carbon off the pistons - there are certainly products that claim to do it well while the engine is running (like Seafoam I guess, but they don't sell that in the UK).

But...well....I had a few weeks to wait while my heads were away, and I'm kind of obsessive compulsive about things like that anyway.

You can run seafoam in fuel and oil so it fine if some gets past the rings. Just put some in a spray bottle, hit the top of the piston with it and let is sit for a day or so, it should really help break the carbon up. I've seen people use ATF also and it's suppose to work great. I would use the sea foam, I run it in a tank every few 1000 miles as maintenance. The engine section or htt would be a great place to get solid answers on removing the carbon
