Don't assume this is true. I manage a car dealership, and it's rare that our on-the-ground inventory really matches what I want to have in stock. We aren't free to order anything we like, and neither are Harley dealers. The manufacturer tells us how many of each model line we can order each month. We specify each one in terms of colors and options, but it's rare that we can radically change the model mix from what is given to us. It's often based on available production (or lack there of), our previous sales history, what we already have in our order pipeline, current national inventory levels, etc. Our actual stock often represents our slowest movers, because we run out of fast moving inventory first!

I'm sure many HD dealers wish they could order 20 Low Rider S's right now... But they can't.

Interesting. I always assumed they were free to order whatever they wanted (except the high-end/custom/limited stuff, of course).

Most manufacturers have a complicated "Allocation Formula" which governs what can be ordered each month... With my manufacturer, the formula looks at our sales rate for each model going backwards 90 days, then it looks at how many of that model line we have in stock and how many I'm scheduled to receive over the next 90 days, and then it calculates a "days supply" by model line. Then the available production (which is different every month) for each individual model line is divided by all the dealers in the country, starting with those with the shortest "days supply." It's not this complicated for all manufacturers (and it's worse for some), but they all have some sort of similar system.

I mean, whatever, I'm not judging. I really just don't understand. I've got a convertible 2 door for when I need to haul a passenger and luggage and still enjoy some sun/wind in my hair.

I own both.. I have a 2015 RK and an 04 WG. Its like comparing a Pontiac G6 to a Caddy.. The G6 is sporty but not a sports car. The Caddy is smooth and isn't meant for cornering, etc.. I ride my bikes about 50 / 50. Short distance its usually the WG, Over 150 miles its always the RK.. 2 different bikes for 2 different purposes.

That is a stout claim. I could have gotten any one I wanted.

OP, at my dealer, the count is similar to yours, BUT it is because they cannot keep Dynas in stock. They had to go to another dealer for mine.

I was told the StreetBob is most popular at this dealer.

I rode my 06 Streetbob for 6 years before trading it in on a 2012 Road Glide.

When I first bought my Dyna I was under the impression that the wife would never get on the back of it. I absolutely LOVED that bike until one summer the wife showed a little interest in going on some rides with me. Needless to say, she was hooked and wanted something a little more comfortable. I jumped on the opportunity to "upgrade" to a Road Glide and she has logged more miles on the back than most people do in 5 years.

I do miss the Dyna and am looking for another bike to put in the stable. Tearing through the mountains and canyons is so much more fun on the Dyna than on the Road Glide. Don't get me wrong. Both bikes perform extremely well but one puts a smile on your face and the other puts a smile on the wifes.

Hmmm,, maybe you should rethink your guarantee zeke,, so far it seems like its over 10 people that said they could have bought a Street Glide, but chose a Dyna, to 1 (you) who bought a Dyna because they couldn't afford a Street Glide... Joe Namath wouldn't be proud of you....

What is seen at one dealer at one point in time has no bearing or merit on any conclusion as to the success of any model.

Dynas out sell softails each year, they out sell Sportsters each year but they do not out sell touring.

There has been a growing trend in California of sport bike owners and stunters to change to Dyna. Look in the Dyna section for the report that Laidlaw HD did on the new Lowrider S when they were selected to do the release of that model. Stunters even had a say in the seat design.

California dealers cannot get enough Dynas so they dealer trade with midwest dealers where the touring bike is the main seller.

I can buy any bike that I want so I have a 13 Street Bob with a 120R, a 14 Lowrider, a 15 Fat Bob and a 16 Lowrider S. I previously had a 10 Superglide. But then I have all the other families of HD including a Street 750. But the Dynas are the heart of my collection and the baddest cool bikes going.
