Very cool Nick. Will do. This write up is one of the best I’ve seen and definitely helped me decide to do this myself. One other question. Did your piston rings need any grinding or did they check out to spec out of the box? I appreciate the reply and will update.

thank you, glad it helps!! The new rings were within spec from the box. Just make sure you check your service manual and position the ring gaps as instructed. Just a heads up, it will take some patience to get the Pistons out of the ring compressor and into the cylinders. At least it did for me.

Tip ........ get yourself a Hastings ring compressor kit they are the best I've used . I have a crappy knock off version of that too , it's such a piece of **** I may as well throw it in the trash. I've had the Hastings one for 30 + years . It would be impossible to figure out how many engines I've built , it's into the thousands now , I'm soon to turn 63 and have been doing this since high school .

just checking back in. been a while. Got this done finally. Im a teacher and pretty busy during the school year, so waited until summer break to to do this.
Very happy with the first test. Running a vance and hines fp3 tuner though, and not sure it can tune it well. Dyno places out here are 3 or 4 hours away at a minimum where im at. My other bike runs a dynojet pcv with a map from fuelmoto i set up about 10 years ago, but other than the tuning needing done, bike is in good shape.
First time doing a bike motor and im no master mechanic, but the end result was worth all the work done. Happy about this a lot.

**** yea man that’s awesome. I’m glad you did it yourself and I’m impressed too. Doesn’t it feel ****in awesome??? How long did it take you? Any problems? I’d definitely suggest the powervision but that’s just me. Congrats bro!!! Let us know when it’s broken in and what your numbers are. I had my 117 dyno tunes recently and while I didn’t gain as much as I wanted, the power is way smoother and lower rpm feels twice as fast as it was.
Hey Nick
Does feel good. My nerves were shot at some points, but when i fired the bike up finally it was all worth it. Just bought a powervision from fuelmoto, their map will get me going for now, my 08 fat bob has a dynojet pcv, was mapped by them back then and run like a top the last 10 years.
I will get a dyno run done and return back with some info when I find someone in the area. Im in lower western kansas, a travel for a dyno run at a dealership (the only places i know of for now) is about 3 hours. We had a dealership out here 30 minutes away and another in Dodge City, both stores have gone out of business in the last 3 years. Im looking for an indy shop at this point.
thank you for the congrats . Your posts got me started so thank you in return greatly, gave me the stuff i needed to know to do this.

Hey bro, nerves aside you got through it. That’s all that matters. Now enjoy the boost in confidence cause if you can do this, you can tackle just about any other problem that will come your way. Happy to help bro.
Unfortunate update, but all things aside, I'll get through it. Love the power on this bike now though.
The unfortunate part, my rear cylinder has a leak, its enough that its more than a weep. It goes away once operating, but then it cools down and theres a substantial drip from the front of the rear cylinder and oil can be seen along the same, and running down the side of the motor. Gasket didnt seat right or smashed. I can see what looks like pieces of orange ring gasket towards the front in a spot, not sure how it happened, but it did unfortunately.
But, at least ive been in to the bike before so its not as scary this time eh? Everything else is looking ok though.
Ive heard some say its normal for new engines/cylinders to weep temporarily. Supposedly it goes away but Ive never experienced this. Id have to see the seal to determine whether or not its actually a problem but Id try it for a few rides and see what happens. On the bright side if you have to go back in itll be easy only doing one cylinder.
