Setting up for long miles
I did what this guy did but with the 2" mending plates. I tried pushing the top out first but that didn't help. After pushing the bottom of the windscreen out, I was finally able to ride happy at 80mph.
I am 5'7" so if you're taller, you might want to try to pushing the top portion outward method first. Either way, it's a cheap mod and it doesn't hurt anything.
Maybe the stock position might work for you too.
Long ride setup: Boss Bags ("30 can") and a Kuryakyn backrest bag. Pack for 3 weeks, including rain gear, 2 tools bags, tire inflator, Anti-Gravity battery pack and an extra set of gloves. Still room in bags for small items.
H-D 19 # quick detach screen.
H-D highway pegs (bike has mids).
H-D Sundowner 2-up seat.
H-D QD sissy bar with luggage rack.
Expandable elcheapo rack bag/back pack for clothes etc
H-D saddle bags for riding gear, rainsuit, toolkit etc.
Cramp buster.
Bluetooth headset in fullface helmet.
GPS with wired in mount.
H-D heated grips.
5 mins to get it set up with screen, seat, rack & bags. The rest of the stuff stays on all the time.
Works for me.....
I bought the HD detachable windshield from ebay and got a pretty decent deal on it.
My first ride with it last night was on my way home from work ( had it shipped to work) and i could definitely tell a difference in the wind protection however the buffeting was insane above 70mph
Thanks to iDc for the link to the modifications he did to the HD windshield.
I did the same thing as he did and rode to work this morning. Holy crap what a difference. Practically all buffeting was removed. Unfortunately the local lowes did nto have any "mending" plates that would work, and since im out of town for work i dont have access to my tools. I ended up using the S hooks and they worked great.
I might experiment with moving the shield around and tilting it forward/backward, see what is the best solution. But ovverall im really happy with the results i have so far
I bought a Protrac drivers backrest. I installed it the day i received it, but it needs some modification to fit me/my motorcycle a bit better. I will say that i think that will help with my concerns using the sundowner solo. Just needs some fine tuning, i will be home this weekend so ill dial it in next weekend.
Now i just need to figure out a way to be more comfortable, bigger saddlebags, and a luggage rack/sissy bar for luggage. I think ill be close to getting this thing dialed in for long distance
