Default Dyna running hot

Hot hot should a new Dyna 06 super custom get and what is the best way to check the temp?

All twin cam engines run hot from the factory, the are tuned very lean. Expect temps in the 220-250 range on average. Adding an oil cooler is always an added benefit. An even bigger benefit would be to alter the tuning so the bike runs richer. If you have a carb bike this is pretty easy to accomplish, if you got a feulie, its going to be a PIA and will cost some $$$ outlay.

Agreed..........a richer fuel mixture will cool her down. Too rich will wash down the cylinders, causing premature wear on the rings, etc. If motor is broken in, switch to a full synthetic oil in all 3 holes. This means Redline Shockproof heavy in the tranny, Mobil 1 V-twin (20W50)in the motor, as well as the primary. You can get away with a synthetic blend, like SYN3 in the primary. Consult your owner's manual

Mobil 1, being a full synthetic, doesn't break down under heat! If you ride in the desert, on a real high performance motor, or on a bagger, pulling a trailer etc. I can see an oil cooler being nice. A cooler engine would be less prone to detonation as well. I don't need one on my engine, and that's FINE with me, as I think they screw up the clean lines of the bike, IMHO.........[&:]

You need to run rediculously rich(literally dumping feul in) to even remotely begin to worry about cylinder damage from feul washdown, talking well under 9:1 or richer realistically. Running in the proper range of 12-13.5:1 range there will never be a worry with that. Hell with the choke out when you first start your bike your in the 10-11:1 range and there is no fear of that happening.

Synthetic oil will break down still, dont think that it won't, it just breaks down at a much higher temp, and thus takes longer to deteriorate, one reason why alot of mfg will prolong the oil change interval. Synthetic will break down in the 280-320 heat range. And oil temps (even with an oil cooler in place) do reach real high temps through some areas of the engine. On these old time air cooled engines, whether your running synthetic or not you should still do your oil changes every 2000-2500 miles. If your **** about your engine and want the least amount of wear, and the maximum engine life, you will change it when the oil starts to turn dark and starts feeling gritty between your fingers. There have been occasions where I have changed the oil on my bikes after only 1500 miles, and I use full synthetic. Air cooled engines are very hard on lubricants.

How many miles you got on it? If you just got it, it'll run a little cooler once it gets about 1000 miles on it. New motors are tight. If it's already broken in, then if you can afford it, get a SERT or a fuel enricher and have it tuned, if not, get the stage I download.

Mine gets hot enough you don't want to leave your hand on it for long.

Just remember that the inside of that cylinder gets around 1500 degrees while firing. [sm=badbadbad.gif]

The cylinder head will probably get 400 to 450 degrees. [sm=icon_flaming.gif]

The heat is coming out. That is what you want.

You can get the oil temperature gauge. It replaces your dipstick. They make a digital that will fit the '06 Dyna. This is the best way to keep track of the health of your engine.

If you get a digital buy a new one. The old ones had a problem with the display not taking the heat after a while.

Be carefull about fluid selection. I don't have the info with me right now, but it seems like there were some significant changes regarding fluids for the '06 Dynas. One was the extension of drain intervals in the trans and primary. And I think there was a fluid type change, but can't remember. I do remember thinking that I wouldn't be able to find the new fluid at my local indy.

I'm kind of cheap. I didn't want to spend the bux for the HD oil temp dip stick. And I don't think it's necessary (for me) to monitor oil temp all the time. So I bought an extra long meat thermometer for about $5. I took the bike (a turbocharged Evo) out on a hot day and abused it - high rpm's, slow speed, stop and go traffic - for about an hour. Oil temp was only 220*. Not bad at all for the worst conditions I might ride in. There after I checked it every once in a while on hot days.

The oil temp is what you really need to check. Mine runs between 186 on a cold day (50-55f) and 214 on a warm day (80-90f)

I recently bought a sleeve that goes over the oil filter that increases the surface area on the filter. I have not riden it for an lenght of time since I put it on...

If I do an oil cooler, I'll get one with a thermostat to allow the oil to get to proper temp in cold weather.

Found it in the HD University technical forum 2006 model year:

New Genuine Harley-davidson Formula+ Transmission and Primary Chaincase Lubricant

- New oil will replace current Harley-Davidson Primary CHaincase Lubricant, Harley Davidson Transmission Lubricant and Harley-Davidson Sport-Trans Fluid

- Primary oil change interval for BT will now be 10K

- Transmission oil change interval for BT will now be 20K miles (32K km)

- Transmission/Primary oil change interval for XL/XB will now be 10K miles (16K km)


So, what is this new Formula+ stuff? Hard to say for sure. What's the OTC replacement? Again, hard to say for sure. Based on the available info for Official H-D oil, I think it will be a while before we really know what it is, and where to get it at half the price. Until we get better advice, I'll use the new stuff and change it at the recommended intervals.

I'll also use Mobile 1 in the engine once it's broken in.

I come from the general aviation world with large air cooled engines (6 cyl 540 ci) with lots of engine monitoring equipment on board. Oil temps on these engines have a red line of 245 degrees...you land the airplane asap if you see it. The engine designers say oil temps that high will damage the engine. 180 to 200 is best.
