Okay guys after much searching on the web, I have come up with nothing but useless garbage for info so here goes. What are the options for raking a SB? Are the bearings pressed into the neck or can I buy raked cups. If this doesn't turn up any info its going to get its neck slit and raked 3-4 degs then I'll buy a set of3deg raked trees.
I was hoping to not have to go this route as it seems a little drastic for a bike thats less than a yr old, but i can't stand the thought of riding it another summer w/o being at least considered one of the coolest bikes in town. I'm thinkin raked 6degs, lowered rear,Fat Daddy 50's wblack spokes 18 rear 21 front and of course the requisite 14-16"apes.
And yes, I've used the stupid rake and trail calculator to death and I can keep the trail in the 51/2 to 6" range.
Yeah I know, I shoulda bought aWG and changed the rear fender but thiswas my bike of choice and I'm gonna dance with the one I brung!
sounds like ya have done the homework.I like where you are going with this. I too have a sb and as long as your bike makes you happy then that is great. If you get some info on this i would like to know what you find. You could hit me with a pm.
Sounds good to me. I havent had it apart yet but I think I recall reading the bearing cups are machined into the neck in another post. In a springer thread I think.
I would be more apt to chop it right. Cut the cast area that would be a gusset if it were a weldment. Bend out to 35 or 36 deg. Cut square tube into the appropriate wedge. This will be your new gusset. Cut barstock into the shape of the new oppening and weld in. The new gusset wraps the joint you just filled in. Tie it into the neck tube and a few inches past the splice. REAL CHOPPER. Dont know about the trail calc, but with 35 or 36 in the neck and 3 in the trees should be a good rider. The 3 in the trees brings the trail back to a lower number. better ride. But it WILL ride like a chopper. No way around that. Its not bad if not to extreme. Just a little different. First bike was a 70 Iornhead, Rigid 40 deg rake 36 in neck hight,Girder frontend with an extra 5 deg, 8.5 feet long. Rode great. To me the new SB took some getting used to!
I've got a local shop that has raked a few bikes with excellent results. They build custom hot rods so they're fairly handy with the plasma and welder. I just didnt wanna drop the coin or chop up the bike if I could get the raked cups. Once you cut it up, its gonna be that way. With the cups, if I didn't like itin yrs to come I could put it back stock. I'm not really worried about resale as i think the bike will look good enough that it will appeal to the masses.
