Default Why make "it" our own?

Sorry guys for ranting here. It's raining and I'm bored and can't go ride.

I was reading another thread and someone brought up a goodpoint, or at least I thought so. Why do many of us work so hard at making our bikes "our own" and somewhat unique and different, yet, when someone here asks a question about what to buy for this or how to setup that, we seemed to be so inclined to push them to do the same thing we did or buy the same parts we did? Don't get me wrong, I've done my share of it but I'm now asking myself why. Someone asks what type of(insert aftermarket part or addon here)are the best, and it seems every response goes like this: "i have part 'X' and it is great and you should get the same". Part 'X' could be slipons, pipes, air cleaners, seat, handlebars, or even God forbid - an EFI tuner or fuel manager, and the list goes on and on. Why do we make "it" our own and then try to make "it" everyone else's as well?

Talk about a waste of space and time - this thread is a good example I guess. Oh well...

Helps us justify our own "emotional" decisions. Ain't nothing logical about $100 chrome pieces.

I think that has a lot to do with it. Makes us feel like we did the right thing if others do it as well. I'm not saying, by the way, that there is anything wrong with this for the most part. Just curious why we are inclined to do it. When you would think we don't want others doing the same things we came up with (or have convinced ourselves that we came up with).

Maybe I need Dr. Phil...

i've noticed that too.

i usually keep my mod details on the quiet side and i try to not sell everyone on my vision of what a harley should be.
i've made a mistake or 2 here makig a derogatory comment re: another member's mod, etc but i realized that's not what it's about and no longer make comments like that one

i also get uncomfortable when people ask me how much a mod cost.

Yep, get Dr. Phil in here, and while were at it, Dr. Freud ( the whole sex and death thing assoc. with our/my bikes, I keep saying)

But, I guess it's human nature to think our stuff is great etc. but I have seen plenty of threads where guys/gals have come on to say some of the stuff they got was $hit etc etc.

Good topic, but what really gets me is when those who have done all kinds a crap on their bikes one day just trade it in for the new model out....adios to the previous days 'baby';" I got a new....." fill in the blank

I USUALLY try to give information such that the person can decide on their own. Not always the case but I'm making an effort to keep it that way. Especially when it comes to mechanical things that could have a negative impact short or long term on someone's ride - like what to do about a fuel manager or a tuner, etc. for example.

I don't mind at all saying what something costs me. It's likely to cost the next person the same thing anyway.

I also try not to "dis" anyone's ride. I'm sure mine doesn't suit a lot of people and some have even told me that. And there are certainly many that don't suit me. But, you are right, that's not what it's all about.

I don't really do too much of that since I like the variety(and because my bike's notmuch of a showpiece) though we all do it at times I think. I like living vicariously through other's mods since I can only have one bike, and I like all different styles. OTOH, it'scool that folks are so generous with their advice, expertise, and ideas even if we sometimes try to talk others into our own preferences...for whatever psycho-babble reasons we do.

We are all fairly successful and strong willed people... it's how we own Harleys. Keep that in mind.

Anyway, we worked so hard in making the decisons we make on our bikes. We really believe "How can I be wrong?"

Hell, I did my research and some more and I cant understand why EVERYONE doesnt decide on V&H BSS with a SERT.
