Also, length is important too - they need to be long so when you stretch your legs out they don't pull up too far. Mine are too big in the thigh and too short so guess what - they fall down gradually. That's what I get for not knowing how to buy chaps...
OH MY GOD. Zippers on the side are the only way to go. I noticed my boots scratched the sht out of my derby cover. I wear chaps in cold weather because they keep we warm. I can MAKE chaps and it's not that hard but you can buy them cheaper ($50). A doctor did tell me that if they are tight they actually protect you better in a crash (road rash). I used to not understand why bikers wear all that crap but now that I'm a member of the Sturgis Polar Bear Submarine Club, I do. Chaps only look gay if you're 5 feel tall and 5 feet round, in which case, you just need to get in shape. Usually when I sell chaps I just cut off the bottom, measuring to keep them the same on both legs but a leather worker can sew up the bottom if you want. They also make leather pants that slip over your jeans and those you do want over sized. Best bet is to try them on first. If they feel a little tight put saddle soap on them and wear them around the house for a couple days and they will stretch. To me it ain't a fashion show anyway. If you have one spur on and a little bandanna on your knee and hair like an 80's rock star you may have issues with sexual orientation. BAHAHAHA
