I did mine a couple months ago and it wasn't bad at all. \\;\\\\\\; I was intimidated at first, but found some good info here and had the service manual. \\;\\\\\\; For thr most part, the install only requires basic tools. \\;\\\\\\; If you are working on an 06 or later, you will also need a long 12mm allen wrench and a piece of 2" PVC.
im in the process of changing out my fork tubes, so either way it requires just about a complete disassembly. the only thing that almost got me, was the fork tube cap popping off with a bit of force. enough to hurt you a bit if you dont hold it down. i was surprised to see nothing of this mentioned in the service manual for my scoot, other than that, the service manual is pretty cut and dry.
+1 on the METRIC allen wrench. that one almost threw me for a loop. good luck and let us know how it turns out.

You dont need to take the fork caps off or even remove them from the bike to do the lowers. (unless the new ones are different) Take the front wheel off, there's an allen headed bolt in the bottom of the tube that I would highly recommend an impact for. The reason is that the tube can \\;spin in the fork. From there, pull the covers, remove the snap rings, and pull the lowers off. (might need to slam them a bit, like a slide hammer to get the bushings off). To put them back, reverse procedure. I made it work without the PVC pipe, but most guys are recommending reinstalling the bushings(new ones) with a piece of PVC pipe, cut so it will fit on the tube to give you something to beat on while driving it back in the lower... Really not a bad job when you get in there.. You should have the manual so you can visualize things..
Its a lot easier than it sounds, the hardest part for me was getting the chrome dust covers up, (putting them back on was a pita too) 2" pvc pipe 12 mm allen wrench and youll be good to go. very easy job, I even re used the fork seals i had new ones on hand but i figured they be fine and they are still good to go 500 miles on em now
+1 to most everyone here. \\; Simple job. \\; Just take your time and work methodically. I did mine ont eh bike as suggested here. \\; I HIGHLY recommend getting a service manual.
One additional tip: \\; If you elect to do the work with the forks still on the bike (easiest), leave the fender installed until you break the hex bolts loose near the axle.

HAHA, good point... You do have to take the "caps" off. I was referring to the top of the tubes that hold the springs in. Again, unless something is different from my '94, there is no spring pressure under the "caps" that you remove to add oil.. Sorry for any confusion.. My bad..
it's pretty easy, me and my 12yr old son did mine. definitely use the \\;pvc idea. I tried mine the first time with a punch going in circles and it just beats up the seal and bushings too bad. \\; the pvc did a great job. to get the pvc large enough I cut a slit long ways and my son stuck in a flat tip screwdriver and twisted it while I hit the pvc with a hammer(gently).
