That's the speed in fourth where the bike is smooth and was just wanting to know if I was winding it up too tight. Wonder how many REV's are too much on a stock motor?

That's not winding it up at all. In fact it's barely out of the lugging stage. If there were miles of clear road in front of me, I suppose I'd go to fourth. If there was any traffic, I'd stay in 3rd -- 3000 rpm and the bike will be very responsive to either roll-on or roll-off.
I saw an interesting article somewhere recently (American Iron?) where the author was positing that traditional Harley riders who get on the newer 96 cube/6-speed bikes run the engines at too low a speed. His theory is that it would explain a lot of the complaints about surging and tranny noise.

Some of that makes perfect sense to me. I'm having to re learn how to ride this thing over past Metrics I've had. I'm starting to believe you need to keep a little higher R's in any gear, not only to keep from lugging this 96 with a 6 speed, but it will also prevent ping at hard roll on. As for surge, I still question that one! I've had a couple downloads put on my bike to help correct the ping I was getting associated with roll on at a little lower R's. The best Download I had to eliminate the surge, was the heat management DL where at certain temps at idle, the rear injector shuts down. What I didn't like about it was, at launch, when the injector fires off again, the bike stumbled! Didn't like that so HD went to and upgraded OEM DL which has helped, but the surge is back! I believe the surge is attributed to a lean burn, where it is most felt in 2nd gear at about 25-2600 R's. As for tranny noise??? I went to Redline Heavy Shock lube, a very noticeable difference! I will stick with that one!

I have a 2008 Superglide Custom 96" 6 speed, it seems in 6 th gear i am running at approximately 32 mph per 1000 rpm, so at 100mph I am doing approximately 3200 RPM, at 75 mph i am doing 2400 rpm, and at 65mph 2000 rpm
I dont know if this helps anyone just some useles figures,

Thanks for the replies, I will now rev higher. I have a twin cam dresser and switching between the two was giving me problems. I use the tach on the dresser and the engine is happiest at a lower RPM, and I was riding the bob at the same speed and the vibration was terrible. I will now ride in the sweet spot on the dyna and not worry about it.
