I don't remove my forward linkage, and use a smaller auto-type filter wrench with a slash liter bottle. No problems.

I remove the nut on the linkage to unscrew the filter with a filter wrench then use a doubled up plastic grocery bag to catch the oil. After I loosen the filter up a little I place the bags over the filter and pull it tight from the other side then finish unscrewing it and let it fall into the bag then immediately trash it.

harley should have designed the case of the motor so that the oil would rain more cleanly rather than all down the front and all over the motor mount

I use a strap wrench and a tin foil moat after punching a hole in the filter first. My forwards are in the way but not too bad. After a few times you get used to it.

Here's a pic of the nut on the linkage on my bike that you should take off to give you better accessibility. It's the little acorn nut where the shift rod and linkage join. Once you take it off the shifter peg linkage just falls forward. when you are done just pull it back and put the nut back on. Simple.

First of all...Joe is awesome!

Second of all, I bought the black K&N filter with the nut on the end. Should be extremely easy to remove. I still gotta remove the old oil filter though.

For those that punch a hole through the oil filter to get it off; do you worry about damaging the threads where the filter screws in??? I would be a little worried about that myself...

Tin foil is your friend, so is brake cleaner. Punch a hole in the end of the filter as someone else mentioned and let it drain for a bit. It will make this task much less messy, that is if you care about messy.
