I just bought a sundowner seat for my 97 Dyna. The seat fits no problem but when I went to put on my quick detachable backrest the brackets are hitting the seat pretty good not allowing it to fit. I didn't mess with it too much because I was in a hurry but I will have to use some pretty good force to make this work and it will smash the seat on the sides pretty good.
Has anyone had experience with this situation before? Unless there is some fine print somewhere saying this seat won't work with a backrest I don't see why it shouldn't
Since the seat is so fat, I have a similar problem on my 2005. The bolts for the luggage rack, that go through the sissy bar, are pressed right up against the seat, making it a real b!tch to take off. It's a tight fit, but it works, and it's a real comfortable seat for both driver and passenger so I'm fine with it.
Mine's MUCH tighter than that. I have to really squash down the seat to get a socket in there to take off the luggage rack and backrest. Must just be what backrest and rack I have though, they came with the bike so I've just left them alone.
Thanks for the replies guys I will see what I can come up with and try to post up a pic of what mine is doing. Maybe there is a difference in the side plates with a fixed mounted vs the quick detachable ones?
dont have any pics of it, but when i run the sundowner with my backrest that has detachable side plates, its really tight also. but i does work ok. mines an '06.
I had this same issue when i had a sundowner seat on my sportster.
What i found to work best is to unscrew the back of the seat, pull it up, slide in the quick detach sissy bar and reinstall the screw for the seat, this worked very well and took away almost all the wear and tear on the seat.
If anyone is worried that the sideplates will wear on the seat, Autozone has some small plastic self sticking edge trim that fits nicely to the edge of the side plates. Just cut to length and apply. This is what I did when I had my Sportster. It had the Sundowner and detachable back rest and sissy bar. Works great.
